Product Description

David Mitchell and Robert Webb's riotous comedy show, The Mitchell and Webb Situation, gushes forth an hilarious stream of surreal and quirkily inventive sketches self-penned by the talented duo. Originally made for UKTV’s much missed channel, Play uk, its cult success catapulted the stars into their acting roles in Channel 4's hugely successful – and Bafta-nominated – Peep Show.

With their comedy-writing developed as members of the prestigious Cambridge Footlights group (where past performers include Peter Cook, John Cleese and Stephen Fry), and honed with a series of two-man shows on the Edinburgh Fringe, Mitchell and Webb have continued to shell out pure comedy gold.

From the Back Cover

Directed by David Kerr (Cutting It and the star-studded Reeves and Mortimer sketch show, Monkey Trousers), The Mitchell and Webb Situation, also features Peep Show regular Sophie Chapman (Olivia Coleman) and a host of young, British comedy talent. Eureka Entertainment is proud to present the DVD premiere of The Mitchell and Webb Situation, finally releasing the first six-part series from its exclusive UK Play transmission. As David Mitchell himself said: "I’m more proud of the way it turned out than annoyed that it was only aired on a small channel."

After writing Bruiser alongside Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras), the pair are set to return to the sketch show format in 2006 bringing their critically-acclaimed BBC Radio 4 show, That Mitchell and Webb Sound, to BBC2.

Mitchell and Webb have to be one of my favourite comedy partnerships of recent years. While poking fun at the seemingly mundane in life, the extraordinary things we all seem able to accept and occasionally going off on flights of hilarious fantasy, they're never afraid to give the inner geek free reign.

This is, I think, the first solo sketch show from Mitchell and Webb, preceding the might Mitchell and Webb Sound and the Mitchell and Webb Look. This is a well written sketch show, and while there is the odd dud most of the sketches hit rather than miss, and the short quickfire nature means there are plenty of laughs in each episode. It really shows the talent of the two young performers, and the great things that have followed are easily glimpsed.

5 Stars.

Generally I'm a big fan of Mitchell and Webb, but this is some of their earlier work, and you can see that they were still polishing their act. This is a comedy sketch show, a bit like The Fast Show, but less jovial, more edgy. They take a look at mundane, everyday situations, and bend them into arcane, goofy skits. It is quite hit and miss, and unlike their sublime radio show and later TV shows, there are no stand out sketches like NumberWang or the snooker commentators. There is a funny, black and white, mickey take of Hitchcock style thrillers, and a mildly amusing running gag with a smug farmer who explains why farming is money for old rope. If you come to this show after viewing Peep Show, it will feel like a bit of a let down, but then Mitchell and Webb had clearly perfected their art by the time of Peep Show. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with this show, it is reasonably diverting and entertaining, it's just that what came later in the career of this duo is notably stronger.

I was motivated to write after reading an earlier, somewhat negative review. This is brilliant. It precedes "Peep Show" by about 3 years and, by the look of it, was recorded on a relatively low budget. Add that to the fact that it rolled out on UK Play and you have a complete recipe for a hidden gem.
The sketches come thick and fast - part parody, part satire and, most definitely, part Python. But it still feels current. A couple of popular TV shows get the M&W micky-take, as do many aspects of our popular culture. At the same time number of characters/themes reapppear at different times throughout the shows often building to an hilarious, simple, devastating punchline. Some of the sketches don't work as well as others, but in reality they are never really around long enough to become boring before the next one takes over.
Olivia Colman deserves a mention too, often providing a foil to the other two with impeccable timing.
David Kerr's direction of a Hitchcock-esque poisoning is also worth a mention as it's worthy of an Oscar in itself. Lighting and atmosphere superb.
Flawed at times yes, but comic genius in ascendency. I think if you can't find plenty to laugh at in here you have spent your life in misery at he bottom of a drain!

Don't expect Peep Show, which is so far off the scale as to be worth 5000 stars. This is a decent show in its' own right; there are some boring sketches, as with any show, but most are worth a chuckle, and some absolute genius moment (watch out for the jammy farmer, futurologist, and "Honour Your Prior Commitments" itself the best sketch I have ever seen!)

I'd recommend buying this for an imperfect but still very funny glimpse into the highest-quality duo in the country right now.

Before the laugh track-laden tedium of the occasionally funny yet ultimately repetititve Look, which stretched inexplicably for four series, there was this worthy studenty effort from the Mitchell&Webb team. The duo are younger here, and clearly trying to find their footing, and while some of the sketches don't quite hit their mark there's a certain sophistication to the ones that do work to make the lesser sketches tolerable and the whole enjoyable. A particular virtue of Situation over Look is the lack of recurring characters across the series, which probably taxed the pair's resources as writers. Nevertheless, it lends Situation a purity which Look lacks. As such, Situation comes across as sub-Fry&Laurie (while not quite reaching the sublime level of that show), making Look look little more than another Little Britain. The other virtue of Situation is the absence of a laugh track. The evil of Look was that a laugh track was introduced from the beginning while the sketches quickly became less subtle. The sketches of Situation are subtle enough not to require assisted laughter. So treat yourself.

As a huge M&W fan, I had to own this DVD! I love That Michell and Webb Look, and thought this would be pretty similar. You can tell it's some of their earliest stuff though, it's not quite as slick as TM&WL has become, and the budget was obviously much lower. It's very hit-and-miss, some sketches are brilliant, some fall way short but the majority I'd say are pretty average: enough to make you smile, but instantly forgettable. You can see that they're going to be very, very good, but when this was written, they weren't there yet.
