Product Description

Autumn, 1797. Reluctant heiress and spirited adventurer Mary Frith has grown tired of her peaceful life in Suffolk. So when she is approached once again by mysterious spymaster Cuthbert Shy, and offered a dangerous but exciting mission to Paris, she finds the possibility for adventure impossible to resist. The plan is so secret that she cannot tell anyone about it - not even Captain Holland, with whom she is now engaged to be married. Travelling as the ‘wife’ of an American artist living in Paris, she falls immediately under suspicion when her supposed husband does not meet her at the docks. And when she runs into an old nemesis, she soon realises she has made a terrible mistake. What had seemed like an exciting adventure has turned into a far more deadly plot - one that could destroy everything and everyone that Mary holds dear…

Living History 1 Jun 2010
By L. Veit
Format:Paperback
The Mistaken Wife is the third book in the series following the adventures of Mary Finch and Captain Holland at the end of the 18th Century, and I began reading it with great anticipation. Melikan did not disappoint - her prose has matured into a confident and beautiful voice, while the suspense of the plot kept up an exciting pace all the way to the very last page. What I especially appreciate about the series is the attention to historical detail. The language is fascinating, the book is peppered with phrases which must have been in vogue at the time, and which still make sense in the current day. As I read I am aware of how very little I really know about this period, but while she paints a detailed picture, Melikan never patronises the reader. She is both very accurate and imaginative. The characters possess the manners of the age, but nonetheless relate to one another like people you might expect to meet in Cambridge, Suffolk and London today. This is Rose's gift - to understand how a period may shape a person's behaviour, while showing that character is innate and timeless.

It is really sad if this is to be the last instalment of the Mary Finch series. It seems like the pace has got greater with each successive book of the series, as has the danger level. It's perhaps especially striking in this third book, as the first half is quite leisurely in its exposition, and full of delightful details. Then quite suddenly things turn very serious and don't let up. Melikan is - as in the second book - quite sly in the way she creates a sort of comfort zone, where it seems that Mary Finch's optimism and resourcefulness will conquer all, and then suddenly the safety net is taken away. The story is great and there are so many nice touches of language and observation. Highly recommended! I do hope that Mary and Captain Holland haven't simply ridden off into the sunset...

Another great book!!! 21 Sep 2010

The third book in the series, I could not wait to get my hands on :) Very well written, with the very likeable Mary Finch and the more grumpy, but equally very likeable Captain Holland as main characters and some interisting figures in the backround. The historical information is nicely weaved into the storyline and not too overpowering or boring, it just makes it all the more realistic. Rose Melikan seems to get the mixture between the mystery, history, suspence, romance and the setting just right every time. I hope there will be more!!!
