5.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Rose 30 July 2012
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Diana learns after her mother dies that she has a twin sister, Mary. She must try and find Mary even though the only clue to her whereabouts is a handful of cryptic letters. Diana is unhappy with her life and missing her mother but she is reluctant to take on the quest because she feels her mother has deceived her all her life about the existence of her twin. After meeting an artist and a beggar she realises she has no alternative but to set out on the quest. First she needs to find the woman who taught Mary to hear what roses say.

The quest leads her to Istanbul and a garden full of roses. Ultimately it leads her to the answers she needs to her many questions about herself and about life and about her missing twin sister. This is parable which can be read on so many levels and will probably provide something different to each reader. It is a book I shall reread many times. I am normally not a fan of literature in translation but I think the translator has done an excellent job in this case.

It is virtually impossible to do justice to this short book in a review as the book is its own best ambassador. As the cover says it is a book which has the power to change your life. I found myself looking at my own life in a very different way after reading this book in an evening. It is a parable for the twenty first century and has some interesting things to say about moulding yourself into what other people want you to be instead of following your own dreams. Along the way there are many other messages for those who choose to hear them and understand. One of the best books I've read this year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beguiling... 12 Jun 2012
By Lizzie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Diana Oliveira was born wealthy - the heiress to an international hotel group. On the outside, at least, she has everything any beautiful young woman could want. However, she was always aware there was something fundamentally missing in her life, and she attempted to fill the void by constantly seeking the approval and admiration of 'Others.'

The story really begins, however, just after the death of her mother. Diana had never known her father so now she finds herself alone and lonely even though she still has the admiration of her so called friends. On her deathbed, her mother revealed to her the existence of a twin Diana never knew she had, and this information turns her life upside down. It is her mother's final wish that she starts out on a journey which will take her from her home in Rio to Turkey in search of her twin, Mary. But the search for her twin is secondary to the lessons she learns about herself and life when her quest leads her to a mysterious guest house owner and rose garden in Turkey. Here she must learn the answer to the question, "Can I hear roses?'

When I began this short novel, I must admit to not being sure whether I liked it or not. I found the first half a little bit rambling and couldn't quite see the point of it. One moment I thought it excellent the next I thought it was nonsense. However, I'm glad I persevered with it (not normally something you have to do with such a short novel) because when we actually get to the rose garden, it gets kind of interesting. I found myself looking forward to each of the four lessons Diana is given, and at the same time wondering when the mysterious Mary was going to make an appearance. There was a nice sub plot with Mathias the artist back in Diana's home in Rio. Ok it wasn't really necessary, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I like the character of Diana and her desire to find out more about herself. The story was tied up together pretty well, although maybe it's just me, but I never really did get the significance of the October Rains.

This is a modern day fable/parable and if you read it as such you will really enjoy it :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking 2 Oct 2012

Diana is grieving for her mother when she has to also deal with the shock of discovering she has a twin, Mary. A series of letters from her mother and Mary take Diana on a journey that forces her to question herself. A journey that sees Diana discover more about herself than she thought possible.

Mathias, a local artist has a story of his own and when these two characters come together they are able to help each other discover truths about themselves as individuals and as a couple.

This delightful and thought provoking story has been popular around the world and I can see why. It was a book I could not put down. It was thought provoking and made me take a look at myself. It came at a time when I am going through some changes and taking stock of who I am and how I am perceived by others was theraputic.

This novel is a modern day parable which is not at all rushed or shortened despite only being 184 pages long.

One to stay on the keeper shelf as I am sure I could find more in it re-reading again.

9/10 for me!

I received a review copy from the publisher for my honest review.
