I'm old enough to have read Gideon of the Yard. It's not him.
I remember the Sweeny. It's not Jack Regan although the language could be.
A detective with a passion for Sherlock Homes and good deductive skills. TVs Jonathan Creek? Nope.
I finished it. Enjoyed it. But will I remember it? Possibility not.
Others may think different and star up or down.
3 stars is a personal choice. Don't be put off by my review.

A good and easy read , with a typical old English humour throw in, would recommend it. Would try to read the other books from this author.

Just a re-run of Sherlock Holmes's plot in 1939. Didn't like the main character, he isn't a very pleasant person a mixture of morse and Maigret but unlike them he doesn't have anything to make you care what happened to him or the case. Wouldn't bother reading any other Hawker books that's for sure.

Not a spoof or a credible 'recreation' of a detective novel (Sherlock Holmes) or good enough to stand alone as a new character.

A nice "simple" read with an interesting plot of who done it!?

The text was easy to read, it took you along at a good pace without being flamboyant and kept you guessing a bit.

This was the first time I've read a story by W.H. Oxley and will happily seek out another. Hawker of the yard is quite a character that I'd like to read more of

I like stories from the twenties and thirties especially when the atmosphere is created. Sadly this book did not create the atmosphere of the time. the constant reference to Sherlock Holmes was annoying and not necessary and the storyline weak, most disappointing. I will try another of the authors books to see if it is any better.

An 'armchair' easy read. A story you can pick up and put down for another day as it is certainly not gripping.
What I would call an old fashion cop story. I liked it for the above sometime I just need an easy read.
I would say give it a go.

A pleasant, fairly predictable way to while away an hour or two but don't expect the earth to move for you !
