Reviews

Expertly directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Miller, The Misfits is a “probing, exciting drama” (Film Daily) of honesty, intensity and sheer poetic brilliance. Divorced and disillusioned Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) befriends a group of “misfits,” including an aging cowboy (Clark Gable), a heartbroken mechanic (Eli Wallach) and a worn-out rodeo rider (Montgomery Clift). Through their live-for-the-moment lifestyle, Roslyn experiences her first taste of freedom, exhilaration and passion. But when her innocent idealism clashes with their hard-edged practicality, Roslyn must risk losing their friendship... and the only true love she’s ever known.

A masterpiece.... The blu ray transfer is not spectacular but the movie is certainly ambitious, well acted, and worth seeing.... After all the script is by Arthur Miller and it features some of Hollywood's finest practitioners. Directed by John Huston with cinematography by Russell Metty and a music score by Alex North it sure has an impressive pedigree. The perfomers: Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter are of course exceptional too. Yes, the scenes with the horses are a bit disconcerting but Angela Alan who worked on the movie assures me the animals were well treated...Some critics have regarded the dialogue as mannered and pretentious..... I simply thought it was well-written and evocative...and I would recommend it to those with a taste for ambitious "literary" cinema.

A deeply moving film, and not just for its being the swan song of a trio of great screen actors: Gable, Monroe, Clift. John Huston directs Arthur Miller's script with subtlety and poetic grace and despite the very different acting styles of the stars, including Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter, the characters blend into a wholly credible bunch of misfits, thankfully lacking the urban sophistication to be described as bohemians.
'Just keep heading for that Big Star up there" - quite sufficient a statement of faith for a lifetime in a world parasitic on greatness and dignity. I believe Marilyn once said: "We just want an opportunity to shine". Indeed, "every man and every woman is a star" - there is light at the end of Miller's tunnel.

Bit disappointed with this hyped film. Seemed to wander aimlessly (which was the plot) but director's ideas seemed random to keep the ball rolling.

This is a great film much enhanced by the Blu-ray version.Marilyn Monroe is superb in this as are all the other cast members. She always blamed herself for hastening Clark gables death by her making problems on set,but nether the less the end result is a great study of human nature. The stark landscapes and the despair that they all suffer from is portrayed beautifully in this movie.
