Book Description

Jan 2009

In the 22nd century, the first wonder of a brave new world is the Phoenix Space Elevator, designed to give mankind greater access to the frontier beyond Earth. Cooperatively built by the United States and the Eurasian Coalition, the Elevator is also a grand symbol of superpower alliance following a second cold war. And it’s just been destroyed.

With suspicions rampant, armies and espionage teams are mobilized across the globe and beyond. Enter Claire Haskell and Jason Marlowe, U.S. counterintelligence agents and former lovers—though their memories may only be constructs implanted by their spymaster. Now their agenda is to trust no one. For as the crisis mounts, the lives of all involved will converge in one explosive finale—and a startling aftermath that will rewrite everything they’ve ever known—about their mission, their world, and themselves.

To be honest, I only read this novel as I'd been approached by the author and wasn't really too sure either who he was or what exactly to expect from within the pages. Firstly what I've got to let you know is that this title is an amalgamation of Sci-fi and thriller which blends the best of both genres that will keep readers of both pretty damn happy.

The prose is descent, the dialogue first class and the story arc is something that has to be read to be believed at just how much David has managed to cram into this offering. It's a great start to a new series and one that is definitely going to help the author make a mark in the genre. Luckily for me I've got the second novel (Burning Sky) to enjoy pretty soon after. A real guilty pleasure to enjoy especially on a boring Saturday with a couple of beers (or beverage of your own choice.)

Mirrored Heavens mixes sci-fi military action with futuristic terrorism and mind control conspiracy theories. The space elevator, a joint project between the US and a coalition of Eastern states, is destroyed by terrorist group 'Autumn Rain', which also backs major civil uprisings in South America. The book follows a number of two-man teams, mostly made up of a Razor who is able to 'link' to computer systems and a Mech (or Mechanic) who is an armoured super-soldier, as they deal with the aftermath of these events, and work to combat the terrorists.

A side plot deals superficially with the suggestion that the soldiers are in fact implanted wit hfalse memories between missions in order to control their temperament and how they act during the mission - a Jason Bourne plot thread, essentially.

If this sounds action packed, it is. Wiliams, who worked on the story for the game Homeworld, is clearly not a man who believes in slowing down. And there lies the rub.

His writing style is terse and detailed, and gives the book a great deal of pace, but does not allow for much character to show through. The author never really stops to think about the various factions or the characters in any great detail. I know that one man is heartless because he murders defenceless civilians to save his own skin, but that's about all.

As a short story this would have been great, but as a full length novel it's not long before you realise it's one big long (emphasis on long) string of action fight scenes, even if those fight scenes are well-realised.

In other words, it's like a Stephen Segal movie. Or a video game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked from the first page 7 Jun 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'll admit now that I am not widely-read when it comes to sci-fi. However, after reading The Mirrored Heavens I am much more likely to read much more of the genre (starting with the next book in the trilogy, "The Burning Skies"). From the first page, The Mirrored Heavens mixes action with wonderfully creative yet wholly plausible futurism. I'm a sucker for geopolitics, intrigue, and plot twists, and this book has them all by the bucketload. However, it's more than just a great story thrillingly laid out: Williams is a talented writer. He displays as much skill in drawing you into the atmosphere of a crowd scene as in depicting a high-octane battle sequence. I found myself re-reading sentences because they 'sounded' nice first time round, and it's pretty rare that an author makes me do that.

If you are a sci-fi fan, you'll love this book. And if you're not one, this book might convert you. Such a shame that it's not available directly in the UK, but the price to get it shipped from Amazon's US sources is extremely reasonable.
