Biography

When they met in the mid-1990s, Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza instantly bonded over their shared passion for bossa nova. Dedicating their 1996 debut Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi to bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Washington, D.C.-based duo have spent nearly two decades creating boundary-warping, complexly crafted electronic music partly inspired by bossa ... Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Washington's finest purveyors of hazy downbeat soundscapes have already produced two stoned classics with Sounds from The Thievery H-Fi (4AD) and their DJ Kicks mix on K7! Records. Their latest longplayer walks to the same tempo but with an overall more purposeful musical strut. It's organic for a start, with live vocals and sounds, trading in the slightly sullen slow-mo digi-dub for a more refined and soulful brand of chic. Check the breathless beauty of Marla's voice on "La Monde" and "So Com Voce" as she floats into the spaces left empty on previous Thievery encounters. They manage to wring every half-drop of their main musical influences (dub, soundtracks and bossa) into this beautiful record as it sinks into deep waters, oozing sophistication all the way down. Perfect accompaniment when too spannered to dance, this contains the added bonus of jazzual jungle finale, "Tomorrow" to liven you up from contented slumber just before the CD ends. Sweet like syrup, not chocolate. --Dan Stacey

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality chill out 24 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best albums I've bought in a long while. If you're looking for both a rich, smooth mix of world music with quality lounge, chill out, you will LOVE this album. Its intelligent, creative and a beautiful, sensitive blend of western and eastern rhythms. Multi-layered, its perfect for close, careful listening or with friends and a good bottle of wine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Chill Out experience 19 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
Every once in while a definitive album is created that stands head and shoulders above all other music in it's genre. The Thievery Corporation haven't just thrown a bunch of mixed tunes or ideas together (although they can be just as impressive when they take that approach), they have made a truly original, thoughtful and beautiful album. The dub influence isn't overwhelming and the hispanic/bossa nova creates just enough of an exotic mood to help the listener forget about the daily stresses of life. Some beautiful female vocals complement the unique electronic moods that this duo from D.C. have been creating for quite a while. If you get this cd your next purchase will probably be another Thievery Corporation album, I almost guarantee it. Highlights are tracks one through to thirteen...Get into the Thievery Corporation, you'll be a much cooler person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 12 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is truly one of the best albums I have ever had the fortune to buy. One of the greatest chilled albums I have heard. Having not been aware of Thievery before I went by the Genre and the excellent reviews it had received. The praise this album and its creators gets is entirely justified!
Buy one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Theivery Corporation 14 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This two Washington duo have produced a sophisticated album, it cannot be compared to any other artist. They have melodic sounds which is evident in such songs as "Shadows of ourselves" and "Indra", mixing Eastern with Western electronic in songs such as "Lebanese blond" this band has shown a new kind of electronic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars cool lounge with a beat 8 Sep 2000

Format:Audio CD
The tracks have a good variation across a number of world influences, and the dance beat is definately there but relaxed enough to chill out to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Languidly warm and cool... 27 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Thievery Corporation lay down the perfect late night CD. Full of warm, atmospheric sounds and super cool vocals it effortlessly switches between electronica, chill out, latin, bossa-nova, eastern raga and even dub without losing the languid vibe that underpins it all and which drives the whole album along. Nothing too challenging and nothing to break the spell, just excellently produced and cleverly designed melodies that provide the perfect backdrop to pure relaxation.
They do the harder stuff equally well - check out "DJ Kicks" and "The Cosmic Game" for two of their best examples - but, like all great artists, they know where they're going & what they want here, and they then do it... superbly.

5.0 out of 5 stars sublime 26 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
It is wonderful to have a WHOLE listenable album of amazingly well crafted, chilled, sophisticated music by one group.

I just love this album, Lebanese Blonde is one of the best chill out tunes of all time but there are some other truly great tracks on there.
