4.0 out of 5 stars Mirror Book 11 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
The book is indeed a detailed work on sailing the Mirror and contains many useful tips and inspiring photos. It did make me feel that, at 62, I may have come rather late to Mirror sailing, but only by about 48 years. Still, I have been a late developer in other spheres too, so not to worry.

I am renovating a mirror at the moment, and so one of the reasons I bought the book was to get some information about how the thing is rigged. Unfortunately, it does not do a lot better in this regard than a general search of the web, which turns up the line drawing which is present near the start of the book. This line drawing is light on detail. The photographs in the section "Rigging a Gaff Rigged Racing Boat" were a help, but presuppose the bits are all in the right place. There is also a slightly irritating tendency to use sailing terms which have not been defined - maybe a glossary would help. Some of us haven't a clue what a clew is, and might expect to have a cringle with coffee for breakfast.

I scoured the book for a detailed picture of the top of the mast, but in the end resorted to images on the web. There, I discovered that the funny looking object with a pulley in it at the top of my mast is a spinnaker crane, but it has been put on upside down - which didn't help me to understand its purpose.

When I have my boat organised, I will take photos of it, and show ALL the parts of the rig, complete with a location image to show where they fit on the whole boat. Why be coy about it? It isn't indecent.

OK, so my purpose was perhaps a little special. Once I got over it, I enjoyed the rest of the book. I am looking forward to getting the boat out in light airs, and, with book in hand, trying out some of the techniques shown.

Having just purchased a Mirror Dinghy this is a great book for me. It has detailed descriptions about the dinghy. Good photographs and diagrams.

It also gives you instructions with regard to sailing. A book worth having!!

4.0 out of 5 stars the mirror book, thumbs up! 20 Nov 2011

Format:Paperback
This is a good book if you own a mirror dinghy, aimed at the racing brigade, theres lots of tips on how to get the best out of the boat, but as a general how to book with regards to rigging/sailing it fits the bill. If you sail a mirror, this is a worthwhile purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely presented, but too generic. 23 Oct 2011
By Rich
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book to help me rig & set up my Mirror, and whilst there is a decent basic step by step guide at the beginning, the rest of the book is just a standard how to sail manual. There is nothing really specific to the Mirror itself, which was rather disappointing. There is a lot of emphasis on racing rules & technique - I'm not sure if the target audience for this book really needs that information.

It is a nicely presented and clearly illustrated sailing book, but a 5 minute trawl of the various Mirror websites available will quickly glean a lot more Mirror specific information than is in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Mirror Dinghy Book 19 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a retired aviator looking for another method of sport transport I found the Mirror Book to be informative. It answered most of the questions I had about Mirror sailing and and a few I didn't know I needed to ask. Written in a very accessible style with very helpful photographs it ticked all of the boxes.
