A is for Alkali 30 Sep 2007
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Young's thesis is that the food we eat is too biased towards the acidic end of the spectrum. Faced with a net acidic balance the body suffers the effects of gastric acid disorders, but it also stores the excess acid in fat. He therefore recommends that one reverses the process, go alkaline and flush the acid out of your body. After this your body will no longer need to store fat. Since the foods on the acidic list contain a number of foods that I commonly overeat I cannot see following the approach moderately will hurt. The switch to making water alkaline has certainly relaxed my stomach and a minimum of effort.

This approach is in line with other writers like Christopher Vasey (no relation) and Gudron Jonsson.

Way too extreme! 17 Aug 2009
By J W
Format:Paperback
To start with the positive, the book is certainly an interesting read and Dr Young backs up his assertions with his own scientific research. There is no doubt, that followed properly you can lose weight and the results are impressive BUT back in the real world, this diet is much too extreme to ever follow on a long term basis.
Firstly, you will have to drink 1 ltr of water for every 13 kg of weight you have, so for me 5 ltrs or so a day. There is no way I could stomach drinking that amount, and it can't just be your plain old ordinary mineral water, no it should be 'ph Miracle water', filtered just correctly with a special fitted filter and 'alkalanised'. Then they are the supplements which number upwards of 30, I couldn't count them all that you are supposed to take, 'basic supplements'. Dr Young reccommends 1/2 to a cup of 'good' oil (omega oils), per day. This is along with a myriad others supplements. Then the diet itself is basically vegan, as all meat and dairy is acid forming, and this is the diet you are supposed to follow for the rest of your life....so this diet is expensive to maintain and requires considerable commitment. There is now way I could follow such an extreme diet, I want to be able to eat out sometimes and also to enjoy food socially. I reccommend taking aspects of this diet and incorporating it into you daily life, such as more green veggies for example, and the rebounding exercises.

If, like me, you stumbled across this book when looking for the next diet to try you're in for a treat! There is no disputing that this is a hardline approach to the alkaline diet but if you're looking for a diet that will help you lose weight, and you're prepared to make the effort, then this is the book for you.

Not only does it tell you what to do it also tells you WHY to do it. Ok, so you can get a bit bogged down with the science here but stick with it and you'll be rewarded. Never before have I understood the (relatively) straight forward reasons why i'm overweight and how I can reverse weight gain forever.

This way of eating is not for the faint hearted and you will have to apply yourself but, with an understanding of why you're doing what you're doing, you cannot fail. And the added bonus is that many of your aches and pains will disappear. Once you understand the physiology of an acidic body you'll never look back.

In short, after 25 years of trying (and failing) every diet I could find, this worked for me. I can't recommend it highly enough. Even if you don't need to lose (or gain) weight you have so much to gain by balancing your pH that you'll never regret buying this book.
