In the working-class Ruhr region of West Germany, the Lubanski family eagerly awaits husband and father Richard (Peter Lohmeyer) to be released from the Soviet POW camp. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Reconcilliation 11 Oct 2005
A sweet, touching, and funny movie, "The Miracle of Bern" allows a rarely-seen glimpse into the immediate post-war era in Germany.
With their spirits low after their crushing defeat in WWII, loved ones still returning from PoW camps in Russia, and a desperately poor economy, Germans had their national pride restored by their soccer team's victory in the World Cup Finals in Bern, Switzerland.
This little gem of a movie is beautiful in its own right, and is particularly poignant for anyone interested in the plight of the ordinary German in the aftermath of the Second World War. The dignity of the human spirit, despite deprivations and hardships, shines through. A must-see.

Definitely agree with the above two reviews. This DVD also has thrilling extras with the footage from the actual world cup and the comments from people who remembered that day too. A film for football followers and philistines alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant, ausgezeichnet, groß!!!!! 25 Jan 2012
This movie has a significance for me as it was one of the first German movies i watched, my wife and i who were learning German watched it along with our German tutor and i had no idea how much i was going to love this film! A story that grips you from beginning to end, based on the true story of the 1954 world cup winning German team with a little bit of a interwoven story of a young boy, who is Helmut Rahns good luck charm as a kit bag boy who attends his games. It is brilliantly put together to form a story that touches the heart and makes you feel good! I know that the side story of the young boy is most likely not real but it is put together so well you wish it was! I could say that this is one of the best football films i have ever seen but that is only my opinion but honestly buy the movie and i assure you, you will love it! If you don't love this as a story then you must have a swinging brick for a heart! All of the above German words don't do this one justice! Give it a chance and it is a movie you will recommend to your family and friends! even if they don't like football!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive and intriguing film 16 Jan 2012
I'm a German teacher, and I struggle to find genuine German films suitable for my younger groups, as many excellent German films are rated 15 and up. I was concerned that this film would be too 'football' heavy, but it isn't. It's a moving family drama, interweaved with a story of football success. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars "...we could feel like human beings again" 1 July 2011
By Thomas
I loved this film. I knew that Germany had won the World Cup in 1954 but I had no idea of all that had to be overcome to do it (and not only on the field of play - I didn't know that some German prisoners of war were kept prisoner for many years after the war's end, for example). Or of the special surge of relief and joy that the efforts of their team brought to the people back home. A friend of mine who was a small boy in Germany at the time described the feeling for me as follows: "for the first time since the war, we could feel like human beings again". As a result, men like Fritz Walter and Helmut Rahn became more than football heroes for him and others. Having watched this wonderful film, it's not at all hard to see why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Das Wunder 18 Jun 2011
I am not a major football plan, and the main reason that I bought this film was to improve my German. Saying that, I was captivated by the three main story threads running through this marvellous film and how they intersected at Bern during the 1954 World Cup. Excellent football drama about how a team gelled together, with a little help from screw-on studs, though perhaps a tad too clichéd at the end. Overall excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic 30 Oct 2008
Probably the best football movie ever made. It's just excellent and the recreationof the action is incredibly close to original archive footage.

The movie is a wondefully woven story, half is a fictional story that is interwoven with possibly the greatest World Cup story.

Loved it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incorrect certificate
Rating is incorrect- PG on cover, 15 on disc! The film is super but I wanted to show it to primary-aged children which involved serious editing of unsuitable language.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is just not about football
This is not a just a football film but one about life in Germany in 1950's.

A wonderful uplifting film, sorrowful, comedic but above all all human life is there.
