Review

'The reality of some of the experience contained within might replace the worthy RYA handbooks with something a little more like reality!'
--sailers.co.uk (December 2009)

'This book is lavishly illustrated...Recommended to all who want a little nautical humour...'
--Nautical Magazine, May 2010

'Each chapter makes us crease with laughter while reminding us about the simple pleasures of sailing.' --The Little Ship, Summer, 2010

Product Description

This quirky, lighthearted compilation brings together many of nautical thriller writer Sam Llewellyn's articles for "Practical Boat Owner" magazine. An owner of a traditional Drascombe Lugger, Llewellyn is an advocate of keeping sailing simple, and in this collection he promotes the minimalist boating lifestyle - whilst poking gentle fun at the expensive, complicated, ostentatious forms of sailing. Laced with humour and tongue in cheek jibes, and illustrated throughout by cartoons from the inimitable Mike Peyton, this is the ideal bunkside read for those who are attracted to the traditional way of sailing.

This is a short book of short stories, one page articles from Practical Boat Owner magazine, filling a couple of pages of the relatively small format. It made me smile, though, the characters are a recogniseable bunch and the author is very knowledgeable. It should also be mandatory reading before any trip to a boat show! That being said, I was left hankering for more, and the book feels cheaply produced.

Take a ride on the minimum boat 25 May 2012
By A. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Hilarious and smart, this short volume is right in tune with our down-sizing era. The author recommends uncluttering your sailing style, cutting out all the bells and whistles, and learning to enjoy the natural and pure pleasures of sailing. The sport as he recommends it is cheaper, more human-sized, and closer to the goal of "messing about in boats" that our childhood fantasies longed for. By the by, the author's philosophy is one that can be extrapolated with admirable results to the rest of life. The chapter on figuring out how to make toast is a classic.
