Product Description

Product Description

Joshua and Ryan both jettisoned most of their material possessions at age 30 to pursue more meaningful lives. Essential Essays highlights essays from the first nine months of their journey into minimalism.

Essential Essays is an edited collection of 29 of The Minimalists' favorite essays about living a more meaningful life with less stuff. This collection also contains a special forward by Joshua and Ryan, as well as two bonus essays you can't find anywhere else: "Dealing with Overwhelm" and "Focus On What's Important."

The book is organized into seven interconnected themes: Living in the Moment, Emotional Health, Growth, Contribution, Taking Action, Passion and Mission, and Change and Experimentation. The order of this collection is deliberate; it is meant to be read from beginning to end. Doing so will result in a better overall experience--a different experience from reading these essays all over the web--connecting various concepts that might otherwise seem unconnected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalism Essential Essays - my review 30 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A pleasant view of all things minimalist - an absolute tonic of a read.

To place yourself in these situations is all positive, absorb & act on, each piece of advice & train of thought is genuine, helpful & sincere - I get a lot from their website & mailouts, this being no exception. Whatever department of your life you feel is lacking, or in need of a spring clean or rethink, its all here - kick back, unwind, sit in silence & indulge yourself - who knows, it could change everything for you, I really believe that. Nice work lads :)

Quite disappointing really. They have managed to raise the rather prosaic topic of de-cluttering to philosophical levels while not really adding anything to the subject. It's all terribly vague when the reader really needs constructive steps to reduce the volume of possessions which are largely not needed or serve no purpose. These very short essays give you general statements about why you should free yourself of possessions but if you are downloading this book you already are aware that you need to offload a lot of impedimenta.

To be honest you'd be better off getting a practical book on de-cluttering. There are a lot on the market - some with accompanying philosophies like Buddhism or Chinese religion etc but you can safely ignore that and still relieve yourself of objects which serve a psychological purpose for you and not a physical need. These short essays tell us more about the writers' lifestyles than you really need to know. I didn't finish the book as I could tell early on that it wasn't going to do anything to lighten my load. If you just want a practical book on the subject try 'Clear your Clutter with Feng Shui'. I reviewed it years ago. It's one you can ignore the philosophy on but take the practical steps you need to empty your space of rubbish.

I have been reading the essays on the website and this structured collection does a great job of combining these essays into a guide for including minimalism into your life. It's full of useful information, insight, humour and personal examples from the authors. If you feel that life is full of excess and you want to start to say "no thanks" to the endless cycle of working longer, harder for a bigger "better" way of life-this is the place to start!

Not a long book, a minimalist one :) Seriously though, this is a great set of essays from some fascinating guys who have changed their lives completely and therefore speak from deep understanding. Well worth the small price tag.

Interesting, after having attended one of their talks on their world tour. As they are separate essays the content tends to be a bit repetitive (when they introduce themselves and explain their background) but they still give a good idea of their thoughts on different aspects of life and they give tips on how to change your own life for the better.
