Product Description

Fight. Organise.

In 1984 a group of independent film and video makers decided to show their support for the miners' strike using the tools they had available: their cameras. On the picket lines, at the marches and in the soup kitchens, they recorded the testimonies of the striking miners, their wives and supporters, in a fight against anti-strike propaganda dominating the mainstream media.

A testament to solidarity and activism, the tapes tackle issues which continue to occupy us today: the right to demonstrate, police tactics, political double-speak, the role of the media. They are a crucial document of a cataclysmic episode of British history.

  1. Not Just Tea and Sandwiches
  2. The Coal Board's Butchery

History of Coal 19 May 2010

Excellent DVD both in terms of its filmic style and the subject matter. An important historical document that should be shared with all young people, as a unique window into a community and way of life that has disappeared in Britain. Challenging, emotionally and intellectually. Buy it.

These films show how the Thatcher government set aside the rule book, the media turned a blind eye to, and in a lot of cases completely distorted the facts beyond recognition, and totally misrepresented the miners. They show the police in huge numbers brutalising the miners with total immunity from any comeback, many on horseback. The films show how this was no ordinary industrial dispute, but was in effect a one sided war - how you don't mess with Thatcher & Co. Very sad. Now look at us, importing nearly all our fuel, next to no industry left, but still reading the Sun. Nothing much has changed really, oh except now we have X Factor now of course!

Watching this brought me to tears, remembering the damage done to our people and communities in a short space of time. Even now, many of our towns and villages are still suffering.
