Book Description

The Mindset of a Champion follows the career of legendary blogger Byron Crawford a/k/a Bol, founder and editor of the eponymous hip-hop blog, from a dark, foul-smelling dorm room in the middle of nowhere, to his pioneering work in the field of online hip-hop journalism, in which he either coined or popularized several slang terms that are generally frowned upon, attempted to have Kanye West banned from the Grammys (years before the incident with Taylor Swift), and witnessed a vicious, passionate sexual attack perpetrated by an animal, which is described here in detail.

From there, it's on to his career as one of the first - and best, he would say - professional hip-hop bloggers, at XXL magazine, where he was involved in a number of controversies, including beefs with rappers like Bun B and Lupe Fiasco, posts that mysteriously disappeared from the Internets almost as soon as they appeared, and threats of boycotts by Muslims and black feminists. Nary a feeling is spared as he reveals the hilarious true stories behind the rise and fall of his career as a semi-professional hip-hop journalist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Informative 5 July 2014

I laughed all the way through this book, sometimes uncontrollably. The deadpan humour great and the first hand account of the history and inner machinations of blogging are illuminative.

This was a good read for any fans of Bol's blog or anyone interested in hip hop journalism (print or online). Bol still has the ability to make me laugh even after all these years and his particular way of writing reminds me of the scribblings of a serial killer and/or an autisitic teenager. In the best possible way. This was mad cheap on the kindle, something that i particularly liked.

Only better. And I mean ED years ago when it was funny, and not an unintended self-parody it is now.

4.0 out of 5 stars a dangerous mind 13 July 2012
By PrinceNYC - Published on Amazon.com

I have been reading Byron for years. The book is just what I expected. It's badly edited. Tons of unintelligibly written sentences and funny as hell. And that's just the first chapter. Less than a Big Mac meal deal and just as nutritious. I recommend it easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really huge blog post 14 July 2012
By The Pope Must Diet - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is Byron's greatest blog post ever. It has the same hilarious style of glib, half-serious commentary as Byron writes an autobiography of his mundane existence. Most of which consists of how to live off of fast food while juggling a modest empire of hip-hop blogging and a career of minimum wageslavery. This is the exact opposite of Tucker Max (nullus): there's no women in the Byronverse, no striving for perfection, and unlike Tucker's writing, it's actually true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cop this pamphlet! 6 Feb. 2013

Byron Crawford takes you on an epic journey through his formative years to the point where he became one of the music blogosphere's most hated (but undeniably entertaining) personalities. He keeps the narrative loose (like he prefers his broads) and never stays on topic long enough for it to become stale. If you can't appreciate the story of a burly, one-eyed, tuba playing, reatil working, fast food devouring, lover of top-heavy white women's ascent to become America's Leading Black Intellectual---I can't mess with you. Buy the damn thing and maybe he'll put some effort into the sequel, and long time fans as well as the entire literary community will rejoice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novella-length expansion of Bol's trademark style 8 Nov. 2012
By Jeffrey J Freeman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For years now, I've been laughing my ass off at this guy's writing on XXL, his website and Yelp (for real, his restaurant reviews are pure genius). I'm glad he's finally published something marginally more cohesive. What's more, he's sacrificed none of his trademark humor - there's at least one laugh-out-loud line per page. I'm not so good at the maths, but that works out to only pennies for each guffaw - that's a steal. So what are you waiting for? Buy the thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bol Bio 25 July 2012
By cfMC FEROX - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Byron Crawford has been the most consistently hilarious writer on the internets for about the past decade. He is like if David Sedaris was black, into hiphop, and less homosexual. This autobiography hews closely to my recollection of the blog drama that transpired over the years, in case you missed it. My hope is that Bol will apply his substantial talent as a storyteller to the net Great American Novel
