Product Description

Product Description

This book deals with the process of choosing and using a milling machine and its accessories. In addition to the machine itself, the accessories include the cutters, cutter chucks, workpiece clamps, vices, angle plates, dividing heads, rotary tables, boring heads and other minor items. The content is divided into three main sections. Firstly, it describes what machines and accessories are available and covering each one in detail. The author explains which are essential and which can be obtained when the workshop activity eventually demands one. There are also suggestions on how the equipment chosen should be installed. The usage of each machine and accessory is covered for all but their most complex uses. Typically, using the rotary table and the dividing head are both described to a detail sufficient for the majority of uses that will surface in the home workshop. The third section deals with the actual machining process, covering the choice of the cutter for the task in hand, the speeds to use and how the direction of the feed relative to the cutter rotation is vitally important. A less-understood feature of milling, back cutting, is also explained.

Helpful briefing 7 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I was toying with the idea of getting a vertical milling machine, so I bought this book to see if was really as complicated as I thought. It turns out that all together it is, but that with everything explained clearly and approachably, it was worth having a go. i have now bought the machine; the next step is to accumulate all the other bits like collets and cutters to make it work, which would have been a very hit or miss process without this book. I feel that with this book it will be quite reasonably straightforward; I'd recommend it to anyone else in my position with no access to an evening class and a wish to mill metal. One thing that perhaps should be emphasised; Harold Hall has also produced another milling book in this series which takes the form of a description of all the bits of equipment you need to do milling adequately. It's called 'The Milling Machine - choosing and using' and it is equally helpful and valuable; both books together would be my recommendation - they're so CHEAP! Fantastic value.

The mystery of the milling machine was something I never seemed to 'crack' but this book is quite informative and helpful in many ways and I am now looking for a mill to try it out. All too often you get arrogant folk who feel because they 'know' the subject, they feel inclined to mock or pull down anything that sheds light on the subject as they feel they are 'bigger' than you, so if this book helps towards unlocking the workings of the milling machine, it's not all bad news and if it upsets the 'know it all' brigade (or think they do..) its not all bad news... Bottom line is its not expensive at the cost of, say, two monthly engineering magazines, is well written and understandable without too much techincal stuff and IS very helpful and as I say, I am now looking at buying a mill and 'having a go' which I think is what it's all about - enjoy!

A really useful book 12 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
I have been, with some difficulty, milling with a vertical slide on my Myford. Having some experience I am now planning to purchasing a small milling machine. I bought this book having read "Milling Operations in the Lathe" and "Milling a Complete Course".

For those starting out I believe this is a really useful book. A friend, who was an engineer all his life (marine and in factories) thought it was an excellent introduction and even said he found some really useful information in there.

So I would definitely recommend this book, particularly if you don't have lots of experienced and helpful engineering friends to help you.
