I got this book before the Dome opened, I hadn't even thought about visiting. But I was more interested in visiting once I'd read the book. The story it tells is on the one hand, the Dome itself, as a millennium exhibition and on the other as a symbol for urban regeneration in the 21st century. The book covers the thorny issue of public transport over private, unfortunately, there aren't many pictures to show the vastness of North Greenwich Underground station, the largest in Europe. But it covers the plan, application and result of recovering the whole of the area from an industrial wasteland into a brownfield site for a new kind of sustainable development in a brilliant combination of text, pictures and architect's plans. Not forgetting that this book contains many unpublished comments, official photos and the very first sketches of the Dome itself, which was inspired by the teflon white roof that Richard Rogers have on their headquarters.
For anyone with an interest in planning, urban regeneration, or daring to define a millennium, this book is for you. Not forgetting anyone who has ever walked into the Millennium Dome and stopped dead in their tracks exclaiming at the scale of the place!
Truly inspiring!
