`Mickey Spillane is a master' -- New York Times

`The 20th century's bestselling novelist'
-- Guardian --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Mickey Spillane was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1918. After World War II, Spillane converted an unsold comic-book project - "Mike Danger, Private Eye" - into a hard-hitting, sexy novel. The Mike Hammer series went on to sell in its millions and Kiss Me, Deadly became the first private eye novel to make the New York Times bestseller list. Spillane has been honoured by the Mystery Writers of America with the 'Grand Master Award' and by with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from the Private Eye Writers of America. He currently lives with his wife in South Carolina. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I came to Mickey Spillane after reading Raymond Chandler and I thought he would pale by comparison - but he didn't. Spillane made me giggle with delight whenever he described women. I bet he had an eye for the ladies in real life.

Anyway, 'One Lonely Night' is a curious tale and is quite violent. This was the first Mike Hammer book I read and I was surprised how much of a thug he was. But still, I liked it. 'The Big Kill' was better and so was 'Kiss Me, Deadly'. I kept reading out oneliners to my friends. To give you a flavour, here is a paragraph selected at random from Kiss Me, Deadly:

'I watched Velda walk toward the door, taking in every feline motion of her body. There was something lithe and animal-like in the way she swung her hips, a jungle tautness to her shoulders. Cleopatra might have had it. Josephine might have had it. But they never had it like she had it.'

Buy both volumes (6 books in total) and enjoy.

Purchased this book more to take a cruise down memory lane, in my teens, Mickey Spillane was a great read for me, probably because they were hard to get due to the murder blood and mild sex themes, It still makes a interesting read, although now the murder, blood and sex is so mild compared to what can be read and watched on t/v. Glad I bought it.
