I have two sons, aged three and five, who are increasingly interested in all things super hero. It's too soon to formally read comic books with them, and there are a lot of cutesy books and cartoons out there (like Super Hero Squad) that are fine for the younger crowd. But I was still hoping for something more serious yet age appropriate. I feel this Thor book, as well and the other round of new Marvel books, is a perfect fit for what I wanted.

First, this is my favorite "origin" book of the recent round of X-Men, Spider-Man, and Captain America. All are illustrated beautifully--rich colors, big splash pages, gorgeous artwork--but boy, Thor takes the cake. I love mythology, and the Asgardian angle is illustrated magnificently. Loki, Odin, the Frost Giants, the Rainbow Bridge, Sif and the Warriors Three--it's all here.

Second, I really appreciate the effort to follow the comic continuity, not the movie or some made-up new "kiddie" version. Thor has to earn his hammer; only the worthy can lift it. Thor is still too cocky for his own good, and so Odin "tough love" Dad sends him to Earth as Donald Blake, the doctor with a cane. If you wanted the movie version, this is not it. Personally, this is a great choice; it gives young kids the "real" origin story.

For the cautious parents out there, do be aware that Thor handles weapons other than his hammer, Mjolnir, and he does fight some monstrous-looking beasts. It's nothing alarming, but I want to respect the wishes of parents guarding their kids from early exposure to violence, I guess. If you like the idea of a Thor book with less violence, check out the smaller Little Golden Book. It's shorter with a lot of the same art, but the swords are *magically* brushed out. The little golden book may be better for the two or three year old True Believer, while this edition I am reviewing could be three years or on, depending on your child.

I recommend ALL these books, by the way. If the other characters appeal to you more, you can't lose. Or if you're like me, you can order them all and feel satisfied that they all share the same high quality.
