Review

"Clark, familiar to some fans of horror fiction but largely unknown by everybody else, deserves a much wider audience. This thrilling, terrifying, and deeply affecting story might just be the one that captures it for him" Booklist on London Under Midnight "Clever, even endearing" Kirkus Reviews on London Under Midnight "Without doubt the best horror author the UK can currently claim as its own" SFX"

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read 29 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is a true masterpiece the way the author takes the reader on a journey through London and Europe in the 1800`s during a time of terror. This author is very underestimated and this book should be a best seller, along with other from the genere such as King and Koontz! An absolute must read and one of the best books I have read in a long time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilling 6 Jun 2010
By Mr. G. Battle VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Clark is capable of producing spine chilling work, however The Midnight Man, a tale set in 1888, does not offer a glimpse of that talent. The story rattles between several perspectives which is difficult to follow at times. There are no particularly endearing characters either and these factors combine to produce a lacklustre experience. The detail, vernacular and background are all well described, Clark has evidenced his research and fans of historical fiction should be entertained. Ultimately though, it's the lack of horror or suspense that let's this one down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Midnight Magic Classic read 24 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Simon Clark has surpassed himself with this one. In "The Midnight Man" we are given the account of Vincent Van Gogh and his mysterious friend, Pastor Hux. Van Gogh is living in Arles, France, and Hux in London, England. The tale is told from the perspective of two women - Ty and Nidabi - who are each living as companions who were saved by these two men. While we get a nicely defined picture of Van Gogh at the cusp of his creative height we are also shown the spiral into darkness of Pastor Hux that has caused him to slaughter many prostitutes and other unfortunates around the Whitechapel section of London.

The two pairs eventually meet and the build-up to the stunning conclusion is well paced. In addition to a fine thriller/horror novel we are also given a perspective that may explain Van Gogh's madness, self-mutilation and fear of poison. The writing prose has that 19th Century feel and you can tell Clark is a fan of Bram Stoker's work. The words run off the page smooth as velvet and as silky as chocolate. You actually feel like you are in 1888. You can almost smell the atmosphere of that dark period it is so well written. Clark states that this was a labour of love and you can tell he enjoyed writing every page. This rubs off on the reader and it becomes unputdownable.
Really enjoyed this book and it comes highly recommended to all. Give it a go you won't be disappointed.
