Using anecdotes as its method of illustrating the development of the middle classes, this book is a very entertaining read. I found some sections more interesting than others but I think anyone with an interest in History or Sociology would enjoy this book.

If you want to know more about the class most under attack in modern society, this book is an excellent place to start (and serves as a good introduction to Barzun's "From Dawn to Decadence").

I found this book hardgoing in places and there was a lot of assumed knowledge with other parts of history, particularly political history. However, that wasn't necessarily a problem as it just means I add another book to my wish list.

It was fascinating and I couldn't help wondering if certain little things had been different what would life be like today. You also notice that over time the same probelms in society keep occuring!

HASH(0x9622a144) out of 5 stars Excellent author 7 Aug. 2009

Mr. James was the head of the History Department in my school years ago. I have five of his books. They are exceptionally well written, very well researched, very opinionated and pro-Britannia. His writing is impeccable and information-dense, meaning that each paragraph has so much information that the reader must slow down to digest all the information. If you like to read proper English, I do not think you could do better than this.
