Firstly, to be fair, if this is the first book that you plan to buy with thoughts of starting up your own brewery - then it is a good resource - just ignore the outdated prices when planning your business finances! My beef is that this book is no different from the 3rd edition that I bought - and so I feel conned. If you have the 3rd edition - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Coming a little over 2 years after the 3rd edition, I was eagerly awaiting an update on this fast moving, growing business sector. I was stunned to discover that there was virtually no changes at all. In the Author's Preface, for example, it is word-for-word identical. So when the Author quotes facts and figures on brewing volumes and bottle sales, he is still quoting from a 2010 report! Why not take 5 minutes to update the figures using the 2012 Report figures?? In addition, all the photographs are the same, and all the business case studies are the same! Most disingenious of all is the prices given for when planning your business finances, where he provides specific costs for weights of various hops and malts from certain retailers - he's using those identical outdated figures from 2010 - which is absolutely not representative of the costs/prices now. Finally, the apparently updated 'Directory of Microbrewers' in the country is far from accurate. I am aware of at least 4 new breweries in my region that have opened at least a year prior to this book going to press (June 2013) that are not listed, and at least 2 that are listed that I am certain are no longer operational. All in all, I think the Author should be ashamed!

I bought this for my husband who is in the industry but thinking of setting up on his own. It seems like it will be a really useful resource for him.

This is by far the best book if you are looking to start up a microbrewery. Don't waste your money buying other books like I did. Go straight for this one as it's the definitive guide.

Reams of info copied regarding HMRC and lists of breweries but not enough info on brewing plant and what capacities could be expected from various set ups, the pro's and cons of starting small and building up, sort of budget for various plants, in short the sort of stuff that someone considering setting up needs, even if it is only a steer in the right direction
