DVD Description

Welcome to the Michael Parkinson Collection, my personal choice of the best moments from over 2000 interviews from the entire back catalogue of Parkinson.

Join me as I take you on a tour of the most important cultural figures of the 20th and 21st century that I was lucky enough to meet. The Michael Parkinson Collection remembers the time I met the great stars of the golden period of Hollywood and then charted the rise of the modern superstars. It celebrates comic genius in all its forms and looks back to the times I basked in the charms of the world’s most bewitching women and lauded the greatest sportsmen of their generation including that most singular man Muhammad Ali. It includes eyewitness accounts of a generation who lived through and fought in two World Wars and the thoughts of poets, scientists and politicians. You’ll find out who my all time favourite guests were plus what happened when I met Meg and what it’s really like interviewing an Emu.

The Michael Parkinson Collection
- a reminder that for over 40 years I had the best job in the world. Enjoy.

I agree with the other reviewers, this dvd is very disappointing, after expecting to see alot of the old Hollywood stars and interviews past that haven't been seen for years, what do we get? Afew clips of some legends,John Wayne,Cagney,Bob Hope,Niven, wonderful yes,but too short! We want to see more of the like and in FULL!! No Jack Lemmon,no Robert Mitchum,no Julie Andrews,no Tony Curtis, some of my favourites weren't to be seen.I am actually returning this dvd because we are so disappointed. You can see these clips on Youtube.Try again Parky! If you go on about the old Hollywood stars being the best then why not show more of them? That's what we want to see.You are complaining about there being no good entertainment/talk shows on tv anymore, bring out the best interviews you did that's what we want!
For anyone who is thinking of buying this please go on Youtube instead. The first dvd consists of 2 1/2 hrs of good clips, the 2nd dvd has a short interview of Parky and out-takes and parky singing or performing with the stars,it isn't even one hour!

What there is of it makes for compelling viewing. It's tempting to sit back and watch the 2 hours and 38 minutes of Parkinson on the first disc in one go. You relive a lot of fond memories and you come to realise that this fairly unassuming journalist really did get to meet and talk to all the greats of the late 20th century, especially in the realms of cinema, television and sport. It is very much Parky's personal selection and perhaps overlarge chunks are devoted to two of the men he admired the most - Muhammad Ali and David Attenborough. Over 800 shows, some guests returned up to 15 times, which explains why Billy Connolly and Stephen Fry also earn a large place in this compendium. This leaves very little time for the remaining hundreds of personalities, unfortunately.

Especially as the second disc is put to poor use, harbouring only a 35 minute documentary with a few more clips, together with an 8 minute compilation of Parky singing, dancing or playing snooker with his guests and a final 4 minutes of days when things went less than planned. 2 entertain could at the very least have given us a second helping for another 2½ hours of clips for our money, there being such a phenomenal range to choose from. Obviously ten or a dozen discs would have been necessary to satisfy everyone, but to 'waste' Disc 2 in this way is a great shame and shows little respect for the people the company is trying to persuade to buy this set. As is usual with BBC video, there are English subtitles available.

BBC's Biggest Mistake 25 Nov 2010
The major problem with releasing all the great old Parkinson interviews from the 70's on DVD, is that the BBC, in a money making idea decided to wipe them (along with many other great programmes - they didn't take into account nostalgia) and reuse the tape. Although they lost many great interviews, they do still have a few that are complete, some of which were shown a few years ago. James Stewart, Orson Welles, Muhammad Ali, to name a few. I'm sure what they have left, if released in a large box set, would sell very well.

Just the best
Worth it just to preserve a true national treasure. After this get the DVD. It does not disappoint and in my opinion is better than the DVD.

The Michael Parkinson Collection
An excellent compendium of Michael Parkinson interviews. Revealing and often very funny clips of film stars and other people in the entertainment business. Highly recommended.

Wonderful collection
Excellent! I hesitated only slightly after reading some of the more negative reviews, my fond memories of Parky's shows convincing me that it should be worthwhile. Read more

Great fun
Bought this for my husband for Christmas and it's great - we've really enjoyed the clips and hearing MPs thoughts on the guests.

What a treat
This is really great, and a real journey down memory lane, I do think that maybe they could have shown a bit more of the interviews though.

I bought this for my mum for Mother's Day as a friend had bought and said how good it was. I intend to purchase for myself too.
