Book Description

1 Oct 2004
Acclaimed graphic artist Peter Kuper presents a brilliant, darkly comic reimagining of Kafka’s classic tale of family, alienation, and a giant bug. Kuper’s electric drawings—which merge American cartooning with German expressionism—bring Kafka’s prose to vivid life, reviving the original story’s humor and poignancy in a way that will surprise and delight readers of Kafka and graphic novels alike.

“A brilliant illustrated adaptation of Franz Kafka’s famous story. It’s a real pleasure to read and one in which everyone will recognize the existential drama and uncanny wit of the original text."—Susan Bernstein, associate professor of comparative literature and German studies, Brown University

About the Author

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is one of the most influential fiction writers of the early 20th century; a novelist and writer of short stories whose works, only after his death, came to be regarded as one of the major achievements of 20th century literature. He was born to middle class German-speaking Jewish parents in Prague, Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The house in which he was born, on the Old Town Square next to Prague's Church of St Nicholas, today contains a permanent exhibition devoted to the author. Kafka's work-the novels The Trial (1925), The Castle (1926) and Amerika (1927), as well as short stories including The Metamorphosis (1915) and In the Penal Colony (1914)-is now collectively considered to be among the most original bodies of work in modern Western literature. Much of his work, unfinished at the time of his death, was published posthumously. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bug's Life 10 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
Franz Kafka's novella `The Metamorphosis' deals with themes of familial change and evolution, using the tale of a young man, Gregor, who wakes one day to discover he has been transformed into a man-sized insect. Apart from the obvious social awkwardness this will undoubtedly cause, Gregor now has to contend with extremely limited mobility and communication. Before his dramatic change, Gregor, a travelling salesman, is the main breadwinner in his family, and consequently their financial well-being is now severely jeopardized.

Gregor's family consists of himself, his father, his mother, and his sister Grete. Gregor's predicament leaves the family in dire straits, and all react differently to what has happened. Mostly though, their reactions are less to do with pity or concern for Gregor, and more with selfish worry and annoyance that they now have to work for a living. At one point Gregor's father throws apples at him, one of which lodges in his carapace and causes an infection.
Chiefly, the roles within the family change, as do their attitudes. Fear and revulsion for their family member quickly becomes hatred and then neglect; eventually he is nothing more than a prisoner, and he is soon erased from their minds altogether.

Kafka's story is a study of the human condition, as well as a fine example of Magic Realism. The novella is pretty quick to read, and the memories of Gregor's transformation and the gradual removal of him from his family and society is a disturbing and brutal indictment on humanity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 30 Dec 2009
By Velvet

I haven't read the original work by Kafka but reading this graphic novel was a great start. It got to the points quickly and I loved the drawings. Though it is a terrifying story, I found it quite funny. I heard that the original 'isn't supposed to be funny'. I found myself chuckling with the words and graphic pictures. Maybe I will be disappointed with the original, if it is all serious. Enjoyed the story very much. I will go on to reading the Trial by Peter Kuper. A lot of work has gone into this book.
