4.0 out of 5 stars Full of jolts and scares! 1 Nov 2007
By Dooga
The Messengers may seem like another typical horror, haunted house type film. And maybe it is, but the way it delivers the genre is different. There are many extremely chilling and well put together sequences that make the film scary and unique in many ways. The jolts never seize, which is a definite good point. There are also a lot of different types of scary moments, like jolty, creepy, suspensful, sickning etc... It isn't ridiculously gory, just very steady and awesomely crafted horror flick... watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Original, but well executed 22 Aug 2008
By Mr. Stephen Kennedy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a haunted house story, plain and simple - but it's refreshing to see one with a decent cast and so well executed. The story is nothing new - family from the city move to country to escape their family problems... house they get turns out to have a past, and may be haunted.
There are no big gore moments, but plenty of atmosphere created by carefully NOT showing you everything for much of the movie, so that when something is seen, the effect is maximized. The ending is not much of a surprise, but the tension mounts thanks in particular to a good turn from Kristen Stewart as Jess, the teenager.
All in all, quite routine, but efficient enough to be worth a watch if you like the haunted house genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where are they? What do you see? 2 Oct 2011
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
*** This review may contain spoilers ***

The Messengers is directed by the Pang Brothers and jointly written by Stuart Beattie, Todd Farmer and Mark Wheaton. It stars Kristen Stewart, Dylan McDermott, Penelope Ann Miller and John Corbett. Music is by Joseph LoDuca and cinematography by David Geddes. Plot finds the Solomon family move into a Dakota sunflower farm and find their hopes of an idyllic new life shattered by something sinister.

There is absolutely no doubt about it, the Brothers Pang, the guys behind 2002s excellent Gin gwai, have a quality eye for visual terror. They are able to construct indelible scary images and genuinely chill the blood with creepy sequences, even with weak material, such is the case here. It's such a shame that for their American debut they should choose to tackle such a derivative picture as this haunted house spooker, a film that lifts from J horror and practically every haunted house movie you have ever seen. Is it scary? yes, for sure, so much so that until the last third you forgive the sense of familiarity because the Pang's have held us enthralled by the lurking menaces within the shadows of this rickety farmhouse. But the pay off is weak and features a plot twist so stupid it quickly smoothers what little trust in the film that was left.

The cast are ineffective, saddled by the inept script they have to work from, but 10 out of 10 for effort regardless. It's the sort of screenplay that gets Kristen Stewart's troubled teenager to meet a potential boyfriend (Dustin Milligan out acted by the Crows), lets them spend roughly about three minutes screen time together, then before you know it he's there with an axe aiding the good fight against evil with her! That's quality.

2.0 out of 5 stars It could have been so much better!! 2 Nov 2007
By Lilly Penhaligon VINE VOICE
The opening scenes of this movie were enough for me to switch it off and wait for the rest of my family to get back and hold my hand. The dvd finally went back on and I thought that the first 30 minutes or so were extremely eerie - the weird goings on, the incredibly creepy little boy who keeps laughing and dancing along to the horrific, Ring-like apparitions, and that nerve-annihilating scene at breakfast with the little boy's cereal spoon... I really thought this was going to rival some of the other very scary things I had seen.

I was wrong.

After the first 30 minutes the film lost the atmosphere completely. I began to be bored by the ham-handed obvious clues - HOW many ravens does it take to tell you not to go into teh cellar? I was also left cold by the acting of both parents who seemed to be almost as bored as I was. The 'twist' was so obvious within seconds of the arrival of one of the characters and after that the film continued to plummet downhill. The ending was absolutely ridiculous and predictable.

My thoughts would be, watch The Grudge, The Ring, the Amityville Horror or the Shining. Messengers could have been so much more especially as I say, the first 30 mins were very impressive but it seems teh film-makers gave up - I would advise you to do the same, look elsewhere, there are better stories to be had.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE SUN FLOWERS LOOKED NICE.. 10 Aug 2007
I can't make my mind up with this film if I enjoyed it or not. It had some good jumps and tension in it but it wasn't the sort of film you would get out of your collection to watch again. The focus point was the house which did look the part old and creepy and was set in a very nice location with the fields of sun flowers. But for me the little boy stole the show how they get children that young to act as well as that is totally brillant and very creepy when youv'e got kids of your own that age. Overall worth a rent but don't buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good thriller. 11 Oct 2007
By DVD Fan
A very good thriller/horror film, much better than I expected. It's almost a mix of Amityville horror and the Grudge in many ways with the location and the effects for the Messengers! Good SFX effects and a good story, that might be a bit predictable for fans of this genre, make this an enjoyable film with a few jumps along the way. Compared to many other otherings of the same type recently The Dark, Darkness, Dark Water and even The Grudge 2 this is probably the strongest allrounder. So if you like any of them you should enjoy this.
