"Don't push me, 'cos I'm close to the edge..."

In America, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the ones who turned the nation onto rap music and this album was the vehicle to do so.

Sure other raps songs had come before like "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and "The Breaks" by Kurtis Blow, but the single "The Message" coverted a lot of people to fans of rap music; not only in urban areas but also in the suburbs. Shortly thereafter, Run-DMC came onto the scene and rap exploded.

This album was the first successful rap album. Songs like "The Message", "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" and "Scorpio" blew up. These songs received heavy radio airplay and R&B chart success. (Critics didn't know how else to catagorize it as there were no rap charts at the time.) In fact, every song received airplay except for "Dreamin'" and "You Are."

The album is superb and you cannot call yourself a true rap fan, historian or claim to have a great rap CD collection without this absolute gem in it.

Because of this album, Grandmaster Flash became the most well-known DJ ever and later landed a job on the critically-aclaimed Chris Rock Show on HBO.

Old Skool Funk 7 Sep 2010
By RichM
Format:Audio CD
This wasn't was i was expecting at all, it's better!I've bought a few "old-skool" hip hop albums such as Eric B & Rakim and Run DMC and although they were influentual i found them a bit dull. Lot's of plain boring beats and scratching but this was a suprise! It's full of soul and funk along with some great raps. "The Message" is probably the best tune on the album but most of the other tracks are great aswell. It was released in 1982 before Run DMC so it's surely the earliest hip hop album to get noticed and recieve airplay. It's an essential album to go in your hip hop collection.
