Product Description

Controversial film version of the life of the prophet Mohammed. Set in the 7th century, it shows how Mohammed received a message from God calling him to bring his people together under one religion and then to take arms against the city of Mecca, home of the powerful religious leaders. Mohammed is never portrayed directly in the film, but is seen rather through the effects his actions have upon others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful intro 30 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The acting is good and the film has good production quality.

People who are familiar with Islamic history will find some elements to be odd - though the opening credits say that the film was approved by Sunni authorities in Saudi Arabia and Shia authorities in the Lebanon.

A creditable effort and one which places some emphasis on the role of the Prophet (PBUH) as a social reformer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not DVD quality 25 April 2006
Format:DVD
I had seen this movie before and I had it in VHS. But I bought this item to have it in "DVD Quality" for my collection. But I was so disappointed to see that it is in VHS Quality if not worse. It looks like they copied the film from a videotape and not from the original film reels. No menu, no subtitles either. It's a real shame because this is such a great movie and I really don't understand why they don't bother because there are millions of potential buyers out there for this unique piece of film history. Seeing it in DVD quality would have made the joy of seeing this masterpeice over and over again a better experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well done 29 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I approached this film thinking it would be a cheap performance of the beginnings of Islam. This was not the case. Even though some of the characters look unnatural with their attempts to put an accent on, the lifestyle and the culture which is shown in the movie makes it look truly authentic.

The film is certified by Al-Azhar university in Cairo as being an accurate representation of the beginnings of Islam. Its nice to see a film giving a positive view of Islam in a time when it is commonly mis-perceived as an intolerant an confrontational religion.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this horrible Blu-Ray release at all cost. 16 July 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Got my Blu-Ray disc of "The Message" today and being a fan of this movie I was very excited to play the disc.

First of all I am hugely disappointed that they crop the movie from sides and made it full screen 1.85:1 Aspect ratio while the original release of The Message was 2.35:1. I compared it with the previous DVD release to clear my doubt and yes the image is cut from the sides which is ridiculous on part of Anchor Bay. I mean why the hell they wanna mess with what the Director has intended? The result is a horrible movie look and it feels like you are watching the movie in Zoom In option.

Secondly, there are no subtitles included in the BD. Is adding subtitles is too much to ask? Its a feature which even bootleg DVDs have. Shame on Anchor Bay,

Thirdly, I am not impressed by the look of the newly remastered print. It looks marginally better than the DVD. They didnt put much effort to present the movie to us which we deserve to see in HD.

There are No Extras included in this release which is also a mystery to me why? I remember watching The making of The Message and Soundtrack in the previous DVD release.

There is also the Arabic version included in Standard definition as a separate DVD which is presented in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio but I dont care about that since I was looking to watch the English version in its purest form in HD.

Overall verdict is that if u have the Original DVD of Message please stick with it as it represents the movie as Moustapha Akkad liked us to see in its Original aspect ratio and not how Anchor bay wants us to see. I would have compromise on the picture quality if atleast the movie is presented in its original aspect ratio. But Anchor Bay got it all wrong by messing up with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and Accurate 30 Nov 2004
Format:DVD
I think this movie was way ahead of its time. Being done in the 70s it clearly and accurately depicits the true beginning of Islam. What is outstanding is the ability the director showed in describing the foundation of this Faith during the times of the Prophet while not including a character who plays His part thus respecting the Islamic tradition of not portraying their Leader. I give the movie a 5 star rating and encourage all those who are doubtful as to the true message of Islam to watch it and understand the commonly misused elements of this faith. It encompasses Islam's view on Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, knowledge, poverty, women's rights, treatment of people of other faiths and the true version of Jihad. For those who want the truth, unattached and independent of this age's media battery, this is the movie to watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Rubbish Edition 10 Nov 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
As mentioned in other reviews, the production quality of this edition of The Message is abysmal. If you want to buy this film at all, then buy a different, slightly more expensive, version: The Message [1975] [DVD]. The same movie, but much higher quality reproduction with proper DVD features. Disc 1 is the English-language film starring Anthony Quinn. Disc 2 is in Arabic and features a completely different set of actors, i.e. with native speakers of Arabic, not dubbed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!!!! 17 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
This film was produced almost 30 years ago. However, the sound and visuals still deliver. The visualisation of 7th Century Mecca and Medina is impressive. Considering the limitations on showing the face of the Prophet and the central characters, the story-telling flows very well and is educational. The acting is average, apart from Anthony Quinn, who is pure class. Its the only film I have seen about the origins of Islam, and I enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone interested in finding out more about the origins of Islam and the trials and tribulations that were faced by The prophet and his followers.
