Although I was familiar with the operetta music, I have never seen this performed as a ballet. it was stunning, the costumes were vibrant & evoked the period. My grandkids loved it so much that we bought a copy. My only complaint & the reason it did not get 5 stars, is the lack of accompanying story information. I did not know the story & watching with 5 & 7 year olds they want to know what is happening. Other ballet videos give a precis before the performance starts, this is my only criticism of Australian Ballet Videos, but I have to say it is not enough to stop us watching their performances.

So much of the charm and enjoyment of this ballet is lost if you don't know the story, which is most amusingly portrayed through mime and sweet dancing. Following other reviewers' comments I did an internet search for the story before watching the DVD and was very glad I did. This 1993 production recorded live, with choreography by Ronald Hynd, is full of interest and action, the music is tuneful and the whole company seems full of energy. The sets are elaborate and rated applause from the audience! The costumes are very colourful and I like the way the main characters are clearly identified by their special clothes. So why only 4 stars - well as a video production we really do need a synopsis (half a star gone) and the second half star is lost for me because at times I found all the background designs and colourful costumes overwhelmed the dancing in the busy crowd scenes. Overall a good buy, very enjoyable and good fun.
