The Bible of Medicine 10 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is absolutely the most outstanding medical work I know. It condenses an immense amount of knowledge in one (relatively) small book. It's written by hundreds of experts - each of them from among the best in their field. It's extensively reviewed in a very strict process of peer review, including specific consultants and the editorial board, to produce a work that is so accurate and so condensed that it is almost like a miracle.

Being a highly religious person myself, I wouldn't lightly call any book a "bible of ..." - but in this case, the Merck Manual is indeed on that level. The only other work that approaches it is Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, but I personally prefer the Merck Manual. One reason for that is the price. I greatly respect Merck for committing to make this work available on a not-for-profit basis. It is enlightening to see a pharmaceutical giant providing such a service to the medical community and thereby benefiting the entire world.

I purchased the last 3 editions (17th, 18th, 19th) immediately when they were released, and intend to do so in the future as well. It's amazing work that can be used for both reference and for regular study. Personally I occasionally take a chapter or section about a subject and write my own 'summary' - the 'summary' usually being much longer than the original, to fully understand the subject.

Physicians in North America were the original target audience. It is a handy reference that many physicians use when checking on some issue (there is so much to remember). Many individuals who are able to understand medical terminology use this reference for their jobs or when looking at their own health because it is accurate and complete. I've used it as a reference when working as a rehabilitation specialist and now as a reviewer of research. While it is quite expensive the quality justifies the investment. There are now quite a few foreign language editions because it is so complete. If you are a hypochondriac this is the perfect book to have; the detailed descriptions of symptoms and disease outcomes will never leave you guessing. These days the Internet has a lot of good info through sites such as Pubmed so you could do without the book. However, the beauty of this book is that you don't need to spend hours searching the net for just one more source - with this one book you can likely survive.

The only home health guide you'll need 29 Aug 2011
By Majted - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been getting and using the Merck Manual for over 30 years to answer questions about disease for family and friends (pediatrics through geriatrics) as well as preparing to ask germane questions of physicians responsible for care of family and friends. It is comprehensive in its coverage of the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of diseases of the human body and contains the latest research results on the treatment options. It's really not that difficult for the layman to understand the medical terminology and the result is factual understanding of the major aspects of disease which you will NOT get from the standard home health care books from Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Mayo Clinic, the AMA or even the Merck Home Health handbook. And, unlike the Merck Manual, these books directed to the laity do not contain the diagnostic information upon which physicians decide precisely what disease they are presented with. Yes, there will be much superfluous information which you may never use, but, when you want and need the information about a specific disease, here's where you should start your education.

Can an excellent publication get any better? 15 Aug 2011

In the case of The Merck Manual, the answer is a resounding yes. I would encourage those who keep Harrison's/Cecil's in one location (eg: office) to have The Merck Manual in another (eg: home). The editors have done a wonderful job in re-formatting the entries so that you can get a concise (< 50 word) review of a topic, & then proceed into a longer discussion.

Signed,

A very satisfied customer.

The Merck manual of diagnosis and therapy 20 Nov 2011

I bought this book and had it shipped to Canada. It arrived quicker than I thought. I find myself referring to it often. I'm a nursing student and love this book. The pages are flimsy but if you're careful it won't tear. I would recommend this book to nursing students - LPNs as well as RNs and other medical staff. I give this book a 5. Hope this helps those who are thinking about purchasing.
