When I initially saw the film (great film BTW) I was intrigued by the music, which sounded like authentic music from the middle ages, but I didn't recognise any particular piece. I was surprised to discover the compositions were contemporary, because the style is so realistic. A very simple style, but very beautiful music, which I'm sure will be enjoyed by anyone who likes music from the renaissance period.

Highly enjoyable 24 Jun 2005
Format:Audio CD
Jocelyn Pook has captured the spirit of the play, clearly having immersed herself in music of the Renaissance yet adding modern touches that are nevertheless appropriate. A CD of variety, from the delicacy of the harp representing Belmont & Portia to the more ominous tones associated with Shylock. Andreas Scholl's counter tenor voice is beautifully modulated and especially haunting is the delicate setting of Lorenzo's 'moonlight' speech: words and music truly in harmony.

I enjoyed this BBC production very much. I have listened to it at least four times since I purchased it months ago, which says something (& will continue to!). It makes you realise that Shakespeare is an irreplacable genius, and I love to read his works, but when you get a superb cast such as this one, which is so good at interpreting the play for the listener (as opposed to reading it, which can sometimes be hard, after all it was written to be acted...)it is very special. And what can I say about Warren Mitchell?! He did Shylock proud! Long live BBC productions!
