The Mentalist of the title is Patrick Jane, a former showman who used his formidable powers of observation, intuition and hypnotic suggestion to pose as a physic. This all came crashing to a halt when he boasted on TV of having helped police search for an enigmatic serial killer known as Red John. In revenge, Red John murdered his family, leaving Patrick Jane a bitter and broken man.
The series picks up some time later, when Jane has joined the California Bureau of Investigation (a sort of small-scale version of the FBI for the State of California) as a consultant in order to work towards catching Red John. The new and cynical Jane has disavowed being psychic, but still uses his abilities to read witnesses, trick people into confessions, and totally infuriate the CBI staff he works with.
The team is led by Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, who you might recognise from her previous successful career as a teen actress), with two experienced male agents called Kimball Cho and Wayne Rigsby. The newcomer is the inexperienced Grace Van Pelt, who often believes in spiritual ideas that Jane sarcastically hates. Jane is played to excellent effect by Simon Baker, who keeps him interesting and watchable despite often being enigmatic, moody, and infuriating.
The usual episode sees the team being called to a murder scene that the local town police can't handle. Jane will appear to bumble around the edges, asking sharp questions and sarcastically dismissing the ideas of the professionals. Eventually, he will pull some trick that reveals the truth in an impressively clever way, although he often misjudges his cleverness and has to be rescued from an angry criminal by the team.... Absolutely insanely good! Brilliant cast, plots, cliffhangers, not at all routine or predictable. Lots of great subthemes that run throughout the entire series as well as genius new plots for each episode. Buy it - you will not be disappointed!

Simon Baker is a brilliant actor: charming, funny, quick witted and a joy to watch; so interesting. He is like a breath of fresh air with his skills, intuition and attitude. The rest of his team and they way they interact with each other, makes a great series. I highly recommend The Mentalist.

My two teenage sons and I can't get enough of this series.Best series by far.The cast is exceptional and Simon Baker is hillarious.So much fun trying to figure out who the criminal is in each episode and trying to figure out who "Red John"is!!!

My sister recommended The Mentalist to me as easy watching. I loved it, but it was already series 4. So I was delighted to find this boxed set. I think it is the best £20 I ever spent. When I got to the start of series 3 I found I had missed something. I then discovered that there were up to 6 episodes per disc: I thought there was only one per. I felt like Chrismas had come early.
The series is endlessly interesting, the Jane character totally watchable and endearing, though sometimes he would drive you mad!
Keep making the series, it is wonderful!
Buy the box: it is money VERY well spent!

First of all, I love the show and the actors. The plot is flawless and the actors are brilliant. Second, It's a bargain to buy three seasons at the cheap price. It is a must-have. Buy it, it is worth every penny.

A friend recommended this series and I've not been disappointed.
Really like the actors and the build up of the relationships. The series is a little bit different from other TV series I've seen (in a good way!)
Although there is a story that continues throughout the series, it can be a bit formulaic at times - each episode centres around a murder and the team investigates - but there are enough surprises and twists to keep it interesting. I was also pleased to find a range of language options (subtitles and audio).

My son wanted it for his birthday. he loves it as do I. Great to try to be perceptive like Patrick Jane and observe clues, body language etc to help solve the whodunnit !
