What I wanted was a menopause diet book. What I got was a magazine feature giving lifestyle tips for the menopause that had been extended to book length. There were a handful of recipes, but a huge amount of the book was taken up with telling its readers to give up smoking, exercise more, etc. etc. These are just general healthy living tips, and it felt as if the book was being padded out to make up for the small amount of real dietary advice. Some of the advice was also questionable, for example when discussing depression the author advises the reader to stay away from anti-depressants and instead take a long, hard look at herself in the mirror and tell her reflection to focus on the positive - anyone who has suffered from depression will know what a fat lot of good that would do!
If you want a menopause diet book that not only gives sound, practical dietary advice and lots of recipes, then try Healthy Eating for the menopause by Marilyn Glenville. It's much better than this one!

Apparently all women go through the perimenopause in their own unique way. It is only when you are in it and begin to get the symptoms that you reach out for something or someone who can advise on how to cope with it. If you have been fit all your life and are body aware (particularly if you do yoga) you will feel the changes more acutely and it can be quite a harrowing time as you realise that your body is transforming itself into something else. This book is very helpful in that it outlines all the possible changes that can occur and gives advice - mainly dietary - on how to move through this trying time with ease and grace and in full health. It is said 'we are what we eat' so using natural nutrients to support the change would seem sensible rather than go on HRT.

Changing shape, bloating, depression, mood swings, menstrual irregularities, hot flushes, lack of sleep and so on are some of the symptoms women can feel (some just sail through blissfully unaware!).

Common sense is the answer as usual - healthy eating, exercise, relaxation, drinking lots of fluids and generally being sensible about your energy.

Good recipes, simple common sense advice and a list of useful addresses. Easy to read and navigate round. Yes, worth a spot on your bookshelf. I can guarantee plenty of bookmarked pages or underlinings!
