Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

This CD was originally released in 1987 and at the time was the foremost collection of Elvis' Memphis sessions available. Comprising tracks from both original albums it includes some notably different mixes which makes this release (in my opinion) all the more interesting. All the tracks have been remastered and sound crystal clear and the few different mixes serve to highlight the backing vocal arrangements and instrumentation and offer some different and very interesting insights into the songs. The tracks are obviously in a different order because this is a compilation.
The well-designed booklet includes an extensive essay from Peter Guralnick (author of the definitive Elvis biographies 'Last Train To Memphis' and 'Careless Love') covering the sessions and the song choices.
To sum-up, this CD remains one of my favourite albums and is a worthy addition to any Elvis collection and a great companion piece to the original albums.

This is a great collection of songs and at a very good price.
Elvis' voice was possibly at its peak around this time and it shows.
I don't need to add to other positive reviews - I agree with them fully.

For any serious collector of Elvis recordings who wants absolutely every different version, this is one that has three that are NOT ON ANY OTHER CD OR LP. Firstly the fantastic song "Suspicious Minds" is a 3:24 version with strings and no brass and includes backup vocals. "Wearing that loved on look" is 2:43 and a vocal repair. Lastly "Inherit the wind" is a 3:11 version (master is 2:56). While the differences may be relatively small, it is none-the-less very important to the collector.

Don't let this one slip by and regret not getting it when it is too late.
Should sellers read this review, they may think twice about the price they are charging for it !!!!.

Throughout the 60's Elvis made films. Sometimes the soundtracks to these were OK, but only occasionally did they do justice to his musical talent.

This album from 1969 is Elvis back in supreme form (sadly perhaps to never match it again). From the opening track "Stranger in my own home town" you know he means business. This song could have been written for Elvis the lyrics are so relevent to the time. The vocals on this track are insistent and he refuses to stop singing regardless of what the band are playing. This is not the only remarkable track on the album. Add to this "Long Black Limousine", "I'll Hold You In My Heart" and "In The Ghetto" and this is reason enough to buy the album already.

Then of course there is "Suspicious Minds" another marvellous track, which brings me to another point about this album. It was recorded in Memphis with a great band of session players. If you can ignore Elvis's voice on this recording (difficult!)and listen to the musicians you'll hear what I mean. There isn't a wasted note on this. This album was recorded shortly after the 1968 comeback special so no doubt they wanted to try and capture some of the magic from that show.

This album isn't as important as the Sun Sessions, but I prefer it. Elvis's voice is better than it was in the mid 1950's, indeed I would suggest that this was as good as you'll ever hear Elvis, and that is a good enough reason to buy this recording.

The music on here represents Elvis' greatest studio recordings in the wrong mix and with no regard to original track order. Instead, you should buy the original 1969 album From Elvis In Memphis; or even better - Suspicious Minds: The 1969 Memphis Anthology.

Blow your brains out! 6 Nov 2005
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD features songs from Elvis Presley's American Studios recording sessions in January and February of 1969. This was the first time that Elvis had recorded in Memphis since the Sun Records days, and these are arguably the best recordings he made since that time. These aren't all the recordings he made at the sessions, but most of the best tracks are here. The classic hits "In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Don't Cry Daddy" and "Kentucky Rain". Other great songs like "Stranger in My Own Home Town", "Long Black Limousine" and "I'll Hold You in My Heart". Every cut here is a winner. I should mention that the version of "Suspicious Minds" included here has a different mix than the hit single version. The horns are missing, and it doesn't have the "fade out/fade back in" effects at the end of the song. Still, it's a great CD.

Great Album selection! I had the album, 1969, year in review, which I sold' a few years ago at a garage sale, thinking to myself, hey, your 'record days are over!! HA!!!! I bought this , because It's a really good collection of 'late 60's songs of Elvis. Raw/Edgy! This Album for Elvis defined a decade. including the best of the Memphis years! A nice mid-point between Elvis' Jordanaire! and Moody-Blue! Years. I think this was Elvis at his best!
