Book Description

1 May 2012
Set against the backdrop of Paris in 1883, The Memory of Scent is the story of two French women, Fleur and Babette, and of how their lives diverge when the artist they both model for is found dead. For Fleur, hers is a life lived on the fringes of the Impressionist movement in a world of colour and music; Babette is not so lucky, and following the death of the artist, her life begins to quickly unravel on the streets of France. This is a novel of the senses, in which memory, love and loss are explored and examined, and where it appears the ties which hold us together can also pull us apart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, engrossing tale 2 July 2012
Format:Paperback
I had the privilege of attending the book launch in the beautiful Rathmullen House Hotel of Lisa Burkitts'
novel `The Memory of Scent'. The Memory of Scent

I will admit it took me a chapter or two to get into the story but I am glad I persisted in reading what unfolded into a beautifully written story which made use of our senses to transport us into the lives of these French Models and the artists of the time.
It is set in a specific time with a very specific backdrop but you do not need to have an interest in that to enjoy the tale. In fact I was so engrossed in the story that it is only every now and then a description of the streets would yank me right back into Paris of 1883.
I loved this book and because of the way Ms Burkitt has written about their lives I found myself caring enough about the characters, especially Suzanne Valadon, to google them and view their works (not a subject I am normally interested in).
I am afraid I can tell you very little else without spoiling the plot but I truly doubt you will be disappointed when
you read 'The Memory of Scent'

4.0 out of 5 stars Artistic with twists 7 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
Set against the backdrop of Paris in 1883 this story is a wonderful mix of friendship, art, love and trauma. It starts off as a bit of a murder mystery as 2 French models discover the artist they posed for is found dead. The story follows the lives of Fleur and Babette and shows how the artists death has consequences for them both as their lives spiral out of control. I loved the fabulous descriptions of Paris in this era, and felt transported into smokey cafes where artistic people came to drink, eat, write and talk. But there is a darkness throughout the book as issues such as sexual abuse, prostitution, poverty and mental illness are tackled. This book opens up to us how artists at the time may have lived and shows us the wonders of Paris and the Montmartre in all its glory. It made me want to go and wander around an art gallery and appreciate the hardship and yet colourful life these people led. A wonderfully addictive read

5.0 out of 5 stars The Memory of Scent captivates 12 July 2012
Format:Paperback
This immediately engaging tale draws the reader into the fascinating secret world of young working class French women as they attempt to navigate the often treacherous path left them by narrow and unyielding cultural expectations. Difficult though it may be, their world is also laced with the best life has to offer--from art and architecture to music and gourmet delights--and the contrast between those hallmarks of wealth and the main characters' dire circumstances makes Fleur, Babette, and Maria's will to succeed all the more compelling. Their voices are strong, moving, and often laugh-out-loud funny as Burkitt seems to channel their essence straight from the 1800s. The twist at the end will make you want to read it all over again!
