I just ordered my copy and wanted to write the first review since I watched the series three times. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is literally an "anime legend" as the title of this DVD Set implies. The anime is about a girl, (isn't it always?) Haruhi and her set of friends who do their best to prevent Haruhi from getting in a serious depression. If Haruhi is depressed, if she looses her faith in friendship, in a bright future, laughter or the joy of life, the world as we know it will end. Seems serious, right? This plot looks already different, but there is more.
First, the characters are maybe the cutest and funniest (this is definitely the anime that made me laugh the most) good-looking ones you could ever see in an anime. Second, while you do not expect any hellish action scene from the series, well it also presents it, if necessary. Third, the supernatural atmosphere of the anime is very convincing and very smart, perhaps as good as you wouldn't expect from a "cheery" anime. Last but not least, the fact that the anime is capable of making fun of itself and of the anime genre (generally speaking) is exceptional. It makes fun of the genre in a very productive and smart way.
Every character (Haruhi Suzumiya, Mikuru Asahina: the prettiest and cutest lady in anime history, Yuki Nagato, Ryoko Asakura, Kyon and Itsuki Koizumi) is like a vast ocean waiting to be discovered in every scene. It's fair to say that it's possible for every character to have his or her own anime series.
Try to watch the series with subtitles because the Japanese seiyuu (voice actors) are doing a great job here, very hard to imitate. And watch the 14 episodes not in order, but as they are presented in Haruhi's order, which you can find on line... I do not say that after you watched this groundbreaking anime you will be a different person, of course not, but even if you have a slight interest to anime, you should definitely watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's different, it's new, it's funny and the joy, the enthusiasm of Haruhi is definitely contagious!
