I loved this book! It was fantastic! I was actually overwhelmed when I finished it, the writing is superb and you just feel like you are there in the room whilst Alessandra is sitting for her portrait. Wow!

It deserves all 5 stars, the book was well written, and although for children, I loved it so much and i'm 20! I've recommended it to all of my friends

I came across this novel while searching for non-fiction books on the Medici. Even though this novel is teenage fiction, and I'm in my early 30's, I thought it sounded interesting and decided to give it a go anyway.

I am pleased I did. It is a very enjoyable read and will hopefully encourage young readers to look at paintings a little different in future - thinking about the story behind them, and the period in which they were painted.

The chapters in this book alternate between Renaissance Florance and modern-day. Young Maria is drawn to an unremarkable painting in a antique shop and her father buys it, discovering a picture underneath. She then wants to find out the story about this picture and why it was covered over.

The story set in Renaissance Florance has a theme similar to that of Romeo and Juliet and even features Leonardo da Vinci and Verrocchio.

Very entertaining historical fiction.

A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
In renaissance Florence, a young painter visits Lorenzo De Medici palace to paint his beautiful daughter.
In present day Italy, Maria, a young english girl is drawn to an unremarkable painting but discovers an extrodinary picture underneath.
Why is the painter secretly armedwith a dagger?
What dark event draws him to the Medici bloody past?
Centuries later, Maria is determind to discover an ancient mystery of love, power and bitter feuds that still burns in the present....

This Book was quite enjoyable. It wasnt extrodianry, but good nonethless, It could be funny and it switched between centuries, until all the mysteries joined up in the end. It had a beautiful story line and the writing was simple, which was a bit of a downfall, which would have made it more understandabl,e for tweens.
