Product Description

Action thriller directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren. Nick Cherenko (Lundgren) is a retired Russian Special Forces hitman, living a normal family life, far from the violence he used to know. When his wife (Hilda van der Meulen) and child (Naum Shopov) are killed in the cross-fire of a gang war, Nick leaves the country and starts a new life in the U.S. as a mechanic. He leads a peaceful, uneventful existence until, one day, an old Russian woman (Levana Finkelstein) offers him a small fortune to rescue her kidnapped daughter Julia (Olivia Lee). At first reluctant to take the job, he soon changes his mind when he discovers the identity of the kidnappers - the same mobsters who killed his wife and son.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING REVENGE THRILLER! 9 July 2008
By Sick-o
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dolph Lundgren's 2nd directing job is finally available in England! I was more than a little suspicious when I first saw that Lundgren directed this movie. His previous movies (in which he only stared) were pretty bad lately, but still I risked a glance and was more than pleasantly surprised.

THE STORY:
Lungren plays Nicolay Cherenko, a former Spetznaz (Russian Special Unit) officer, now a mechanic, who witnesses how his wife and boy get killed by mob boss Sasha (I know, I know, it sounds familiar). Years later he works as a mechanic in the States, illegally, and is hired by a woman whose daughter, Yuliya has been abducted by Sasha. Reluctantly he agrees and goes back to St. Peterburg, where already a handful of mercenaries are waiting for him. They suceed in freeing Yuliya and head for the Finnish border, but Sasha's troops are already on pursuit.

Lundgren delivers both, his best acting AND directing performance. This is not a comic book over-the-top action bang-up movie with explosions every 5 seconds, but a really well-paced, suspenseful and realistic (to a certain degree) action-thriller, you certainly won't regret watching!
This film also shows a bit of modern Russia today (much of the dialogue is in Russian but subtitled).
Not only recommended for Lundgren fans, this is a personal favorite.
AKA "The Russian Specialist"

Alternatives:

Death Wish [1974], Death Wish 2 (1981) Charles Bronson is the unbeaten KING in the vigilante/revenge genre.

The Evil That Men Do [1983] Another great Bronson film, closer to THE MECHANIK. Revenge is secondary here.

Wake Of Death [2004] Jean-Claude Van Damme's best film so far.

Ms .45 ( Angel of Vengeance ) ( Rape Squad ) Rape & Revenge drama from a woman's point of view.

Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
i,m a big Lundgren fan and I watched this thinking it wasnt going to be that good because of the low budget. Turned out to be a great movie of which i thought was better that the Jason Statham Movie with a similar title. Would definitely recommend to any action movie fan.

By L. Hay VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A fast-action flick with a simple plot. Dolph, is Russian ex-special forces in this one. He comes out of retirement, (he has been working as a motor mechanic in L.A.) and with some of his ex-army buddies, sets out to rescue a kidnapped girl wrenched from the bosom of her wealthy, distraught mother by the baddie who killed his wife and son in Russia.
It is non-stop fighting and shooting from the start with ample blood and a few scantily clad young ladies into the bargain.
There was a day when Mecanic meant Charles Bronson, an avenging assassin, but Dolph is a virtuoso on the four stroke internal combustion engine. And, halfway on his flight from Mr Bad, stops to fix his fanbelt. Quite a guy.
Dolph stars and directs in this one and I have to admit he does a good job. The action is fast; the scenery is stunning; and the soundtrack is great. My respect for the man is growing with his every project. (I thought Missionary Man really good).
Dolph is a great successor to JCVD and Seagal. If you enjoy their films, you will probably like this one.
Never boring, it is well worth a viewing.
