Book Description

6 Mar 2013
2013 Reprint of 1959 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In August 1958 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., preached two sermons, "What is Man?" and "The Dimensions of a Complete Life," at the first National Conference on Christian Education of the United Church of Christ at Purdue University. In response to demands made by conference attendees, King allowed publication of the addresses. With King's consent, the sermons were published by the Christian Education Press in a short book entitled, "The Measure of a Man." The press and King arranged for proceeds to be shared evenly, after the former had recovered its costs of publication. King first developed the theme of "What Is Man?" during his seminary days. King believed the sermon's title to be "one of the most important questions confronting any generation," proposing that man is many things: "a biological being", "a being of spirit" who is "made in the image of God" and "sinners in need of God's divine grace".

5.0 out of 5 stars A road-map for lost souls 9 July 1998
By A Customer
This book is a great way to get back in touch with youself as a spiritual and meaningful human being. Many of MLK Jr.'s speeches are so popularized that they often leave his other great works in their shadow. This is one of "those other" great works. Definitely worth the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where do i begin! A MUST read 22 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have not read many book so far however this book exploded in my mind (in a good way ofcourse) from language itself to what is in the book written by the great Martin Luther King is so worthy of a read. The language is not tricky and is quite informal, which is good as it felt MLK was having a conversation directly with the reader.

The chapters maybe short however the brief yet very well written chapters which would enlighten many people's spirit are a must read. The author covers basic questions and solutions which has been forgotten in time and takes the reader into each topic step by step.

This is one of the reasons why Martin Luther King was the great man that he was, his knowledge to his wisdom, this book signifies his brilliance. I am definetely looking forward to purchasing other books by Martin Luther King, they just have such a effect on a person's mood and spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cross Cultural 23 April 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I have used this book in Leadership Training for years. Recently I used it at Gindiri College of Theology in Nigeria. The huge 250 pound student body president said it caused him to weep, thinking about repentance. This was one of the only books graduating senior received this year, because the cost of books is such a high % of their annual income.
In the US, white High School students have returned years later to say this small book changed their thinking and understanding of who Dr. King really was. Mine too. Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 6 Dec 2005
By Jim Murrow - Published on Amazon.com
Dr. King, as we all know, was a man of intelligence, persistence, devotion, and respect, and this book inspires all of those qualities in each of us. I have purchased this book for family members, and they have received its message with the same delight that I did. I highly suggest reading this or buying as a gift for a friend in need of a little inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Refreshing 24 Nov 2004
By D. Stewart - Published on Amazon.com
This writing was quite interesting. Dr. King as we all know was a great man and leader. In this writing he points out a great way to look at the world, and all human beings within this world. Throughout this writing he speaks of God and how God is the way. A very enlightening piece of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars King the Theologian 11 Jan 2006
By Wes - Published on Amazon.com
Before reading this short book I had a limited appretiation for Martin Luther King Jr. I only revered him for his social action and not for his theology. Now I realize his elequance as a theologian. This quick-read is life changing and is an amazing perspective on humanity and the nature of his exsistence

5.0 out of 5 stars Eloquence 10 Aug 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
What an amazing man. King writes with such love for humanity and such desire for an improved society. Though I am not religious, I am very engaged by his discussions of faith. It is this thesis of the role of humanity and the notion of how precious life is that draw me to this book every few months for inspiration.
