Product Description

Product Description

The third volume in the internationally bestselling McKinsey Trilogy, The McKinsey Engagement is an action guide to realizing the consistently high level of business solutions achieved by the experts at the world’s most respected consulting firms.

Former consultant Dr. Paul Friga distills the guiding principles first presented in the bestselling The McKinsey Way and the tested-in-the-trenches methodologies outlined in The McKinsey Mind, and combines them with many of the principles and procedures implemented by the military and other organizations. The result is nothing less than the business equivalent of a Special Forces Field Manual.

True to its stated goal of arming consultants and corporate problem solvers with a blueprint for achieving consistently phenomenal results, The McKinsey Engagement is short on theory and long on action. Each chapter focuses on one element in the celebrated TEAM FOCUS problem-solving model and features a concise discussion of a key concept or principle, followed by:

  • Clear rules of engagement
  • A set of operating tactics
  • Sophisticated problem solving tools
  • Easy-to-follow action steps
  • Exercises, checklists, and training tips
  • War stories and best practices case studies

A toolkit for bringing clarity, discipline, and purpose to all your problem-solving and change management initiatives, The McKinsey Engagement is an indispensable guide for consultants, as well as for executives, managers, students, and corporate trainers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book...seriously 7 Nov 2009
Quite simply appalling. I'm thinking of moving into a consulting firm after time in accountancy and recruiting and thought that this would be insightful. Far from it. It's 200+ pages of padded out waffle and light on true insight. Probably only 3 recommendations in the book that I thought were worth remembering.

1) The problem the client has asked you to answer is not always the problem that needs addressing.
2) Ensure buy-in from the key client decision makers throughout the project and not at the end
3) In interviews try to test a hypothesis rather than simply gather data.

Afraid I can't recommend other books that are better but this book is laughable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful and informative but not stunning 15 Aug 2010
Good actionable methods to follow and a good insight into the consulting mindset and methodology.
However, seemed to offer very low level advice (do a ton of research and interviews) to produce recommendations in a structured format. I feel sure there must be more to consulting than that?

Worth a read for leaving me with questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Prep for Business Consulting 26 Feb 2012
By IvanKo
I recommend this book for anyone aiming a career with McKinsey, BCG, Bain and etc. It gives a great insight into a consultant's mind. I regret not reading before taking MBA Strategy classes!
However, if you need a deep-dive into McKinsey lifestyle and some tips'n'tricks of how to work 80+ hours/week while staying happy-you better go for 'McKinsey' mind where you find much more of hands-on help how to perform better and look sharp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Secrets and more 27 Nov 2011
By Jaxeeee
This is an excellent insight into the secret world of McKinsey, one of the most successful companies of business consultants in the world. I was interested because I was coming into contact with one of their consultants and wanted to know what to expect and it did the trick. Very good toolkit too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Toolkit for better decision making 1 Sep 2009
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Businesses and other organizations usually solve their problems through team efforts. The business consulting firm McKinsey has developed special expertise in team-based problem solving and change management. In this book, former McKinsey associate consultant Paul Friga describes TEAM FOCUS, an acronym he had invented to describe McKinsey's method of problem solving. He integrates this McKinsey-based method with other approaches. getAbstract recommends this hands-on book to executives, managers, team leaders and business consultants who want to improve their business operations and are looking for systematic approaches
to problem solving.
