OK, So the Maze Runner was a really great book. Then came The Scorch Trials which was a Really Really great book. Then we had The Death Cure which was quite a good book. So what do we have here? Well the links to the Maze runner are few and far between. If you are expecting answers to your unanswered questions then you will not find them here. Dashner takes us back 13 years before the events of the Maze Runner with a whole new cast of people. This book describes survival during and just after the Flare, the onset of the Virus and the set up of the organisations that presumably became WICKED.
I have to say that although this is a good book, it did not enthrall me as much as the Maze Runner Trilogy. I felt that the protagonists stumbled from one fight scene to the next, and in quite a few cases escaped for no logical reason (ie the crowd simply stop fighting because a girl tells them to stop.)
In another scene, our survivors are weaponless and just happen to stumble on some serious firepower when they need it.
Be warned, there is quite a lot of graphical description of blood and gore, but hey, we are dealing with the end of the world as we know it.
So in conclusion, Yes I enjoyed this book. Will I continue reading Mr. Dashners stories? Most definitely. Was this book as good as the Maze Runner Trilogy? Not in my humble opinion, but read it for yourself and see what you think.
