I've only recently started watching all the mini-series I've missed over the years. The best one I've seen (and we see quite a few!)-- the best MOVIE I've ever seen-- is The Mayor of Casterbridge.
Ciaran Hinds IS Michael Henchard. He's absolutely amazing and, despite his sad and deeply flawed character, he keeps our empathy. That is a very difficult task, too, since he creates some horrible situations for himself and for others. Yet, he's human and is trying to do what he deems best, though what he deems best at the time is so very very wrong.
His performance kept me riveted throughout the film and kept me thinking about the movie for a long while afterwards, as well.
Every performance in this was outstanding. The cinematography was gorgeous and the music was haunting. I looked for the sheet music to this theme afterwards, but couldn't find it. I'll keep looking.

This is a truly splendid production. Ted Whitehead's screenplay manages to capture the spirit of the book and yet deliver a fluent and stimulating dramatization. The production design and art design are extraordinarily beautiful and convincing in their detail. All the cast carry off their roles well. Ciaran Hinds as the Mayor is just about perfect - his impetuosity and passionate temperament are totally believable. Jodhi May is affecting as his "daughter" - some of their scenes together linger long afterwards in the memory. Juliet Aubrey is wonderful in a part quite unlike any I have seen her in, and she "ages" brilliantly. James Purefoy is terrific as the Scotsman Farfrae - never a swagger. The story is engaging and deeply moving. It is one Hardy's best books and this is surely one of the best adaptations of Hardy ever put to screen.
The only bugbear is that the DVD product says, on the box, that it has a number of special features. None actually appears on the disc. Also there are no subtitles. It is a good looking and sounding transfer, but the unfulfilled promise of more is a disappointment. The film itself is so good I cannot bring myself to deduct a star for the omissions.

Format:DVD
Having studied The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, i jumped at the chance to watch this made for TV film over the New Year. I found it to be truly excellent, filled with brilliant performances. I thoroughly enjoyed it; it followed the book faithfully - ensuring that all important points in the book were faithfully recreated. Anyone who has read the book should appreciate this, i most definitely recommend it to any fan of Hardy.
