Product Description

Review

"Independent, unorthodox, even bloody minded - Johnson can be all of these and it's what makes him worth reading. The Maverick amounts to an analysis of how we've done business this past decade and holds valuable lessons for the next one." - Peter Bazalgette, Chief Creative Officer of Endemol Group and Chairman Endemol UK "The Maverick column displays original thinking that often challenges conventional opinion - Luke Johnson's views are provocative and worth reading." - Michael Spencer, founder and Chief Executive, ICAP

Funny isn't it? - most business books are written by academics, consultants, and management theoreticians - people who have never run a business in their lives. Here, for once, is a book by the real deal: someone who has started companies, grown them to a decent size, had a few failures along the way, but proved that he can cut the mustard.

Johnson's writing is superb. Mercifully free of claptrap jargon, pseudo-science, and all that motivational bunkum you get. He writes simply, is refreshingly opinionated, and backs up his opinions with evidence. The book's so good that it should be made required reading on every business course in the country. No chance of that, of course! The people who teach business courses prefer arcane and useless theory to practical reality.

If you want something amusing, insightful and informative to read on holiday this year, this hits the spot. I'd rate it as one of the best - and certainly the most enjoyable - business books I've read in the last 3 years.

I liked this book. It has a a series of short, concise and incisive essays on a whole manner of business topics. My only criticism is that all the essays are quite short and some of them lack depth and leave you wanting more of an answer that what is given. I suppose that's fair enough though - the book clearly states that they are articles from the author's newspaper column, so its not unreasonable they are short and to the point. Worth the money.

An excellent book , a compilation of the author's newspaper articles . Both educational and entertaining to the reader . And there is no fluff nor padding , straight into the meat of each issue .. .. In my financial " heaven " we'd have more treatises from Luke Johnson .. .. .. and a damn sight fewer from Messers Kiyosaki & Trump !
