I first picked up Richard Dyer's book whilst researching for a theatre costume design course, hoping that it would widen my understanding of the character-audience relationship borne from the representation of character.
This collection of essays has proved to be an insightful, thought-provoking book that challenges not only how I design a character but also how I see the world.
Of particular interest to me was the essay on stereotyping and the comment as to how we need stereotypes to order the world around us, whether these stereotypes are negative or positive.
As a gay man, Dyer could easily have used the book as a soap-box. Instead, he uses his sexuality to engage the reader, adding particular depth to the essays discussing homosexuality.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the representation of both self and others.
