The book gives lots of good insights into the game, but as the title suggests concentrates on the numbers and probabilities. There are useful chapters on strategies and software tools. Didn't reveal any great secrets though.

Core Knowledge, Well Presented 29 May 2011
By Horse Trader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Since players have a limited time to act, whether online or live, they need to come to a sound decision with real-time quickness. This book by Collin Moshman and Douglas Zare lays out the math behind making good strategic decisions in hold `em.

As EV is at the heart of making call/raise/push decisions, the book keeps coming back to discuss how to determine EV. It also discusses topics like bankroll management, dealing with the inevitable downswings without panicking, typical hand situations like top pair vs AK, and how to influence the probabilities via altering the Nash equilibrium.

Even though I knew a little about many of these topics, they lay the foundation well and without requiring a lot of math, then build upon it. If your math is up to it, you'll enjoy the entire book; if not, you'll still take out of it plenty that will help you increase your ROI.

Key points are accented in the Kindle version (and presumably the hardcopy version) and are definitely worth re-reading until you understand them. Highly Recommended reading.

Another classic by Moshman! Highly recommended! 21 Jun 2011
By Become New - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've always played poker mostly by "feel" and have been pretty good, but knew if I ever wanted to become great that I had to learn more of the mathematics involved and incorporate them into my game. So I decided to buy a book that dealt specifically with the math involved in poker, and although there were multiple choices, I went with this one based purely off the fact that it was authored by Collin Moshman and Douglas Zare. I've purchased both of Collin's other poker books, and I credit the majority of my poker success from what I've learned in those teachings and I highly recommend them. As do I this newest book as well.
Collin deals with everything I've heard about but never understood; such as EV, variance, bankroll management, hand ranges, Nash equilibrium and much more. Now my game is now more advanced and my understanding of poker is deeper than ever. There's a reason so many young internet based poker players are crushing live and online; because they took the time to learn all these strategies and concepts and incorporate them everytime they sit at the table. Whether you consider yourself a novice or an expert, Collin and Douglas will help strengthen your foundation in an easy to understand way, and you will be amazed at how different and clearly you look at the game of poker afterwards. And the confidence you'll aquire simply from posessing and utilizing these tools correctly is priceless.

If you want to invest in your future and increase your winrate then trust me, YOU WANT THIS BOOK!!

Poorly Written 5 Feb 2012
By prof_engineer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an aspiring hold 'em player with an advanced degree in engineering, this book presents alot of the math concepts of the game, but these concepts are very poorly explained most of the time. If you get this book, plan on spending alot of time deciphering the meaning that the authors intended -many times you will simply move on and hope that it will become clear later. There are other shortcomings of the book, for example, all the probablilites on hand strength presented apply only to two-handed betting situations where all the other players have folded, and it is not presented how drastically hand equities can change with additional players or how to adjust your play in these situations.

This book does present good concepts, but could have been written much more clearly. It is hard to imagine that there isn't a better book out there on the subject.
