without doubt the worst book i have ever read.
really... not just a bad book, but categorically the very worst.
I was stuck on a very long train journey with it, so soldiered on to the end. the most annoying thing was having to retreive it when i read something that made me throw the book to the other side of the cabin (happened quite a lot). rediculous plot, preposterous characters... and as for the characterisation of the english characters... it's like dick van dyke in mary poppins... all 'cor blimey guvnor, tis a right pea-souper tonight' sort of thing. really! i'm not kidding!
this is the only ludlum book i have read (believe me after this i wasn't about to go back for more) so i dont know if he is always this awful.

The mistake is that this novel relates to The Matarese Circle which is, in my view, the best of Ludlum
In the Matarese Circle, the Matarese were serious people with no room for mistakes.They meant business. There was nothing funny about the Matarese Circle.
To suggest that the Matarese were back raises great expectations. Unfortunately the Matarese Countdown is very week. It tries to be funny where there should be no fun. Too many mistakes by both the Matarese and the agents.
Why Ludlum made this move I cannot understand!

This is rubbish. The Matarese Circle was fantastic. I had hoped, for years, that a sequel would come. When it did I was so happy I rushed out and bought it.
However, it is annoyingly slow, completely over the top, unbelievable, codswallop. Robert Ludlum seems to have cashed in on the first book by writing an ill thought out and confusing story which relies on drawn out verbage and incredulity to cover over a plot that is as week and transparent as cling film.
Summary: Hard to pick up. Easy to put down.
