The continuing tale of Matthew Dawes, the sailor, whose cowardice invoked a curse, that of immortality. In the first book, Master Mariner, he lives through periods in history, ranging from Francis Drake, to Samuel Pepys and beyond.
In this book, up to relatively modern times, the curse is lifted, but sadly, Nicholas Monsarrat died before he could finish this excellent novel, and it was finished by someone else.
Although an excellent read one can't help being disappointed in not being able to read what Monsarrat had intended as the end.
Similar to Dickens' Mystery of Edwin Drood. Here, however, no one did anything, the novel is suddenly cut off, just like that.

This volume completes the story started by Monsarrat 25 years before. The sadness is that he did not have time to complete the mariner's journey through the years to the mid - 20th century. Monserrat's wife has made a valuable addition to the large number of sea stories.

An unfinished conclusion 9 April 2002

Mr Monsarrat died before he could finish his epic sequel to The Master Mariner:Running Proud. The weaving of history through the life of his fictional character is wonderful, in the original sense of the word--inspiring awe and admiration. Through all the episodes, which for the balance of the second book are presented in precis form, the Mariner escapes death by runnning away, as in the first book. The conclusion is a tribute to what Monsarrat saw as the ultimate in sea power, the St Lawrence seaway...and also a stunning & fitting end to the story of centuries.

Too bad the author expired before finishing book two. Book one was an absolutely outstanding sea adventure.
