Product Description

Book Description

John Buchan, author of The Thirty-Nine Steps, gives his account of the famous massacre. In February 1692 the small Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were massacred by Campbell of Glenlyon's troops under orders from the English Government. AUTHBIO: John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist. He wrote adventure novels, short-story collections and biographies. His passion for the Scottish countryside is reflected in much of his writing. Buchan's adventure stories are high in romance and are peopled by a large cast of characters. Richard Hannay, Dickson McCunn and Sir Edward Leithen are three that reappear several times. Alfred Hitchcock adapted his most famous book The Thirty-Nine Steps for screen.

Best book on Glencoe for beginners 20 Oct 2008
By Shawn Marchinek - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For many Glencoe is a famous and often told tale of deceit and treachery. The Massacre of Glencoe by John Buchan is a refreshingly simple, easy to read but very informative narration of that fateful day in the Glen and the events that led up to it and those that followed. I have read many books on the Macdonalds and specifically of the massacre in Glencoe. The Granddaddy being "Glencoe" by John Prebble. Prebble's book is full of background and swimming in facts that should satiate any avid scottish historian or those with an interest in Glencoe. But John Buchan's book was a wonderful read in its telling. It was easy to read and read like a story, although sadly it happened. The characters were real and alive. I appreciated his words and although I knew how it would end I was sucked in with every page and could not put it down. This book is a wonderful history of the trials of the MacIans of Glencoe. I highly recommend this book for the novice or the seasoned veteran of Scottish history.
