The story of a mildly ambitious valet, Thomas Noon, who is poked and prodded down devious paths by a Machiavellian tutor, is a wonderful read. Everything, from the politcal climate to the central love story, is turned on its head. In this strange world, set mostly in 18th century Venice, only Noon seems stable. I say seems, since he takes a few sways himself. The book is a delightful riddle, has a thrilling ending, and reminds you sickeningly of that first time you ever thought you were in love. But it's the writing that catches the eye. Layers of deceit and intrigue, stylishly wrapped, that make it a joy to unravel.
