Product Description

Product Description

'You don't seek guidance from those drunken men, So why insist they mend their rags again? God's lovers stand beyond all faiths, as they Are shown by God Himself a higher way.' Book Two of Rumi's Masnavi is concerned with the challenges facing the seeker of Sufi enlightenment. In particular it focuses on the struggle against the self, and how to choose the right companions in order to progress along the mystical path. By interweaving amusing stories and profound homilies, Rumi instructs his followers in a style that still speaks directly to us. In this volume, stories such as 'Moses and the Shepherd', 'The Foolhardy Man who Trusted a Bear's Good Intentions' and 'Mo'awiya and Satan' are among the most popular in the entire Masnavi. The most influential Sufi poem ever written, the six books of the Masnavi are often called 'the Qur'an in Persian'. Self-contained, as well as continuing the journey along the spiritual path, Book Two is here translated into rhyming couplets in the style of Jawid Mojaddedi's prize-winning translation of Book One.

It is easy to read, more flowing than other published translations of the Masnavi I have seen and it is beautifaully written both by the Original author (Rumi) and by the translator. There is something nice which I can not describe in Rumi's Masnavi which soothes the soul when you read it. I genuinely think the Masnavi has the power to help people looking for wisdom. This book has been a revelation for me but I especially enjoy reading it because it is rhythmic poetry (couplets) so it has that song like quality and you do not get so tired reading it, even when you do it over and over again.
I am so glad I bought it, will recommend it to people of heart.

If only I could read Persian 1 Dec 2011

I just recieved this. I read a couple of pages and I am so far satisfied. The translation seems decent the only thing I am afraid of is that the translator was only able convey the outer meaning of the text because he tried to make the lines rhyme. That's the difficulty I guess of translating prose. It's a choice between the beauty of the words and correctly and fully conveying the double, sometimes triple, meaning behind them. If I could read and understand Persian, even if only a little, I would buy the original in a heartbeat. It seems though the translator won awards for his translation(I think) of the first book of Masnavi so I suppose this is the best anyone can find. Rumi himself it seems wrote rather simply so I don't think the meaning, in general, is lost. It may be more difficult to fully understand but as for the translation, in terms of how accurate a translation of such text to another completely different language can be at best, is very good.
