Review

Silva, whose debut, The Unlikely Spy (1997), put the WWII thriller back on the map, brings the genre up to date with a vengeance in an exhilarating story that roots razzle-dazzle espionage heroics in contemporary political headlines. The Islamic fundamentalist group Sword of Gaza has apparently claimed responsibility for the Stinger missile attack that brought down TransAtlantic Flight 002, and the President, lagging in the polls a month before the next election, has responded by recommending a costly new antimissile defense system. But wiser heads at the CIA don't believe that Sword of Gaza shot down the plane. Michael Osbourne in particular has reason to remember the signature wounds in the face of the dead terrorist found near the Stinger launcher, since years ago his lover was killed in the same distinctive way. Now that Michael and his wife Elizabeth are trying for their last chance to have children, he's called away from her side to go after his bete noir, the freelance assassin dubbed October, who all but pointed the Stinger at Flight 002, and who's now agreed to execute all the accomplices to the deed. Michael would be even more worried if he knew about the troubles he had much closer to home - for example, the Society for International Development and Cooperation, those warmongers whose tentacles reach high up in the Agency and the White House itself. The closer Michael gets to October, who's now taken out a Society contract to liquidate Michael, the greater the danger to himself, his wife, and - thanks to a gleefully inventive series of plot twists - the American political system as we know it. TWA Flight 800, Star Wars, Whitewater, Vince Foster - they're all here, together with enough soothingly familiar spy stuff (the beautiful killer, the triple-cross, the conspiratorial military-industrial complex) to wring a sigh of pleasure and recognition from the most rabid paranoiac. A damn good read! 4 Oct 2005
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book a great deal, even though I read it on a 747 flying out of Kennedy Airport towards London! This is Silva's second book, and the first to deal with the threat of international terrorism. It is quite topical in a sense, considering the fate of TWA600. It is an excellent thriller, fast paced, with well-developed characters. Clearly a good training for Silva, since his character development in his subsequent novels was outstanding. I do not agree with some other reviewers who state that the plot is not believable. I believe that it is all too believable. The story starts when an international airliner is downed by a missile fired from a terrorist on a boat. The terrorist kills his accomplice in a signature fashion, which comes to the attention of a CIA analyst, Michael Osborne, who has his own personal score to settle with the terrorist. And so we plunge into the intriguing and scary world of international terrorism, and the anti-terrorist efforts spearheaded by Osborne. Of course, there are some interesting sub-plots woven in as well, often dealing with the personal lives of the main players. It was a damn good read, and can I strongly recommend this book.

Fantastic 22 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I wouldn't usually have read this genre but a close friend recommended it so I gave it a go. Daniel Silva tells his tale wonderfully with twists and turns unfolding along the way, some which you would never see coming! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was excited to see that the same characters also are in his new book which I shall be ordering soon. I thought the character development was brilliant and I sympathysed with Delaroche, his situation and this sad ending.

Gripping 8 April 2011
What a difference a good story teller makes. The narrator for this book was absolutely brilliant. The story was excellent and I was so disappointed when it had finished. Highly recommended.
