Book Description

2 Jan 2012

Three brilliant stories for young readers by Britain’s best-loved children’s author, Michael Morpurgo.

The Marble Crusher

Does Mr Manners, the headmaster, really have a machine that crushes marbles? Albert thinks so.

Colly's Barn

Colly the owl and Screecher the swallow band together to save the barn.

Nick beats the bully, Stevie Rooster, and becomes Conker king. But can he rescue a mistreated dog while searching for the best conker?

Former Children’s Laureate and award-winning author of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo, demonstrates why he is considered to be the master story teller with this collection of stories for children.

About the Author

Michael Morpurgo Former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo needs no introduction. He is one of the most successful children's authors in the country, loved by children, teachers and parents alike. Michael has written more than forty books for children including the global hit War Horse, which was made into a Hollywood film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. Several of his other stories have been adapted for screen and stage, including My Friend Walter, Why the Whales Came and Kensuke's Kingdom. Michael has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. He started the charity Farms for City Children in 1976 with his wife, Clare, aimed at relieving the “poverty of experience” many young children feel in inner city and urban areas. Michael is also a patron of over a dozen other charities. Living in Devon, listening to Mozart and working with children have provided Michael with the ideas and incentive to write his stories. He spends half his life mucking out sheds with the children, feeding sheep or milking cows; the other half he spends dreaming up and writing stories for children. "For me, the greater part of writing is daydreaming, dreaming the dream of my story until it hatches out - the writing down of it I always find hard. But I love finishing it, then holding the book in my hand and sharing my dream with my readers." Michael received an OBE in December 2006 for his services to literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILL BOOK 17 May 2008
There is a new boy in school and Sid Creedy decides to tell him some very unusual things about the teachers at this school. Albert believes everything until the Head Teacher finds out about the marble crusher...

This story is brilliant! Michael Morpurgo has got a talent of writing stories that really touch hearts but I have now realised that he can also write stories for younger children which are works of genius, like this book! It is full of laughter, sadness and a couple of little (quite big actually) lies.

I think that children from 6 - 8 would enjoy reading this book; they are who I would recommend it to and I really like this book and I would rate it 8/ 10 because it is worth that score!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Children under 7 (this title) 25 Aug 2010
By Debbie
My 9 year old son (year 4) has suddenly adopted an interest in reading!!! (at last) thanks to Michael Murpurgo!!!! -some of his books (as an adult) have had me in tears!! (Private Peaceful) Highly recommended!!!Fantastic!!!, having read about six books, (all superb - The Butterfly Lion, Dear Olly, Cool etc), this title he felt was babyish),when asked to explain further he stated it would appeal to someone aged about six. This authors books will appeal to children from about five to fifty plus - trust me - fabulous reading! The Butterfly LionPrivate Peaceful

4.0 out of 5 stars Sid creedy 21 Nov 2010
A Kid's Review
I really like this book because it was really fun, especially the first story. The main character Sid Creedy call my attention. He is an unfair liar, but really creative one!
I like the imagination of the author and how he describes the machine and how it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Marble Crusher 12 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Great book, but of course it is because it's done by Michael morpurgo, especially for little kids. Three stories, one about the headmasters marble crusher, another about grandad's old barn and the barn owls, and the last about the conker king of jubilee park and old station. I would say the age range who really should read this book range from six to ten year olds.

3.0 out of 5 stars My review of the marble crushed 31 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have given this book 3 stars because each story is different yet they are all linked because each one is about animals,I liked that.I would enjoy this cool more If there was a bit more adventure like Michael Morpurgo`s previous book the nine lives of Montezuma.however this book was very enjoyable and a fit`s in nicely with Michael Mopurgo`s collection of fiction books.

This is the type of book that is great for a holiday because you avoid the need for a great read by taking away a collection of interesting stories.
